Just gimme the news

So what is the hope from a new record? I'm 46 and have been a fan for their entire career. But, the last 4 or 5 records were really not that good. I've been hoping for years that the band strip things down. More Bobby, more rock n roll, a lot less polish. I have appreciated the evolution of this band in many ways. But on and off stage they've lost touch with their roots in my opinion. My musical tastes have changed a lot over the years. Hell I'd even take a country record as long as it's listenable. Sorry but plan a is a bore to me. Anyway, somewhere they have a roots record in them. I for one keep hoping and find myself disappointing. I will say this: I really loved the last tour. Fully isn't my favorite record. But, that was a really bitchin show. Hell produce your own record and put out a rock record. I am excited as always and hopeful. But truth be told, I don't have high expectations. It's better that way as the letdown is easier. I'd rather see them play dfn in its entirety and tour around that than have another record in my collection that never spins.

Big and echoey is what I heard...somewhere....and produced by a fan, Kevin Drew.

There's another producer too, but I keep forgetting his name.

I love the production Kevin did on the Andy Kim album last year.

Longtime fan here also. Have high hopes for the new album.

Would LOVE an all acoustic album in the future. But not acoustic versions of old songs!

What do I expect from the new one? Honestly, if it's as good as NFPA, I'll be happy. I love that record, and I thought it was a solid return to form for the boys. I called it a late career gem when it first came out, and I still stand by that statement. I'm also a big fan of World Container, despite the excessive Bob Rock cheese that drips from songs like Pretend and the title track. Speaking of which, has anybody listened to the demo version of World Container (the song) that was posted on the previous page? Now THAT'S how it should have been recorded.

Funny, I've been listening to WC a lot lately; it kind of fell off the table for a long time but I've been enjoying it. The demo version is pretty cool to though, it's nice having a stripped down version of the song, it suits it nicely. :thumb:

Don't post much but I'm getting really excited about whatever is coming Friday. I won't be disappointed if they do a surprise release but I think more realistically they'll announce the album and probably drop a single. Could be anything though. We Are The Same I thought was great. NFPA I enjoyed but it doesn't get as much play as the classics do for me. For the newer stuff I personally enjoy IVL and WC a lot as well. Based on a lot of what I'm reading here I think if I love the new disc a lot of others will be disappointed and vice versa. Personally for me disappointed just means I'll listen to the other albums more but it'll still get some spins, kinda like IBE.

I'm just guessing here but I'd say that in order of most frequently listened to is something like this:

DFN, RA, FC, WATS, IVL, TATH, PP, WC, NFPA, UTH, M@W, IBE, s/t

Just to give an idea of my favorite flavors of Hip.

I went to a Junofest showcase on Friday night at a Legion in Calgary. Tons of musicians there playing a couple songs each. Jim Cuddy, Whitehorse, and many others. Just before Jim Cuddy came out they announced there was a special guest in the house that wanted to play a song. Turned out to be Kevin Drew. He came out and did a song with Luke Doucet, and it sounded awesome. I tried so hard to find Kevin after the set to ask him about the album, but no dice.

9 Hip shows in 6 different venues

2007-01-20 - Winnipeg - MTS Centre
2009-09-10 - Winnipeg - Centennial Concert Hall
2011-07-07 - Winnipeg - Shaw Park
2012-12-01 - Fargo - Fargo Theatre
2013-01-26 - Winnipeg - MTS Centre
2013-01-28 - Brandon - Keystone Centre
2013-09-06 - Moose Jaw - Mosaic Place
2015-02-14 - Winnipeg - MTS Centre
2016-08-05 - Winnipeg - MTS Centre

I'm about the same age, first time I came across The Hip they were playing a local high school dance and picked up the EP (never saw the show, which is a different story involving teenage shenanigans). I though Plan A was a great album to follow up We Are The Same, which is in my opinion their only weak release -- especially the second half. Discounting that album, last five albums have had some of my favorite Hip songs -- Dire Wolf, Lake Fever, Dark Canuck, Josephine, At Transformation, Vapour Trails, Emergency...list is too long.

My favorite album is likely Day for Night, which is maybe that "middle ground" album as they moved towards some of the more abstract lyrics, though they've always been pretty non-linear for the most part. There's a bit of menace to that album, would love to see Emergency return to the set list. Also my favorite era of shows.

I've always wondered about producing themselves, especially now with their own studio and Paul producing a few bands in recent years. Maybe the way they work requires some outside input that they value. Bob Rock has his downside in terms of clean production, but I think World Container is a pretty concise album (where We Are The Same is the opposite). Don Smith I always equate with that Up To Here and Road Apples sound, it must have been quite an experience for the then young band to work with him.

This album, I expect them to continue down the path they're on, I'm not expecting a return to Up to Here. For my non-Canadian friends curious about The Hip, I usually equate them to REM. The first few records have a distinct sound and style, and then they start to veer off in other directions. Both have had mainstream hits that don't generally reflect the band's entire catalogue of songs. A lead signer who sometimes seems to be in a totally different band than the band behind him. Some fans only want to hear that early era, which is fine -- people usually equate those songs to a time and a place with good memories.

After the last Kingston show, I ended up eating breakfast at the table beside Gord. As he finished and was leaving. I just quickly said thanks for the music, coming up on three decades of the band being part of my life. His response was classic, a handshake and "thanks, I think we're maybe on to something."

I love, love, love that this band; and Downie in particular, has provided us some amazing music and life memories. we should always cherish and appreciate this gift. I look forward to Friday and always have faith and hope.

Going through their teases...i see mind, shadow, cloud, vortex, storm, april 8, may 12...plus a fish, a balloon, a clown, microscope, blood and some other references...nice approach and thought is they are getting it out, getting it all out. thinking good thoughts!

I'm hard pressed to remember the last time I've been this excited for a new release. Probably back to Phantom Power which was the first Hip album I was able to get on release day.

The teasers have been fun and I've been going through the back catalogue - so many great tunes and great memories and looking forward to more.

To me, it doesn't matter where this new album ends up on my list of favourites (Road Apples will forever be #1). It is new Hip and that is all that matters.
I will still buy the album, the t-shirts and the concert tickets. No complaints here about overproduction, setlists, Gord's screaming, ticket prices, who the producer is etc.
I LOVE this band and everything that goes with it and I can't wait for Friday. No matter what they do, they cannot disappoint me.

Just about liking some more than others but no really bad Hip...WATS not so good the rest great...but everyone's opinion will vary, just great to see Hipbase alive again! Once the album is out maybe we will crash this site...not likely but you never know.

want to be a nobody without peer
want to be a thought that's never done
want to shake your faith in human nature
want to break the hearts of everyone
want to be your wheezing screen door
want to be your stars of Algonquin
want to be your roaring floorboard
want to break the hearts of everyone

I totally agree - I think NFPA is up there with Music At Work as one of my favourite Hip albums and I've been a fan and seeing them live since 1991.
