I think i'll need to buy some external speakers for the turntable.

Noooooo! Hahaha

Those Crosley tables are awful for your records. The needles on the cartridges are cheap and will wear out the grooves much quicker than even a cheap used table. Take a look at some used equipment. You can pick up some good quality used equipment for good prices if you look around. The Crosley will do for now, but play sparingly...

Yeah, I hate jumping on people for buying Crossley, but they do no justice to the medium. Spoke to too many people who have been underwhelmed by vinyl (and not all vinyl is equal) but then find out they're using a low-end player. It can be an expensive, possibly addictive, hobby and I found an upgrade in gear was well worth the investment. I've traded my way up to a Thorens table and an ortofon blue cartridge, and even records I'd listened to countless times were a revelation. Original pressing Up to Here was one, jump up in gear and it blew me away (again).

Again, not to jump on the Crossley purchase. Records are expensive, but flipping through the used bins is a lot of fun --plus some great conversations in record stores -- hopefully the player is your gateway drug, you get hooked, graduate to the hardcore stuff.

 Haha! See, what do I know?! Thanks for the insight. Of course, i should have come on here first for advice before i got it. Oh well, it was cheap, so no big deal if i don't use it.

We all start somewhere. I started out getting some decent used equipment and have been upgrading over the years when I get the cash or come across a good deal.

When I dusted off my albums and repurchased a record player I started with a lower end Music Hall table -- it was OK, enough that with a few albums I went "wow, that sounds better than I've ever heard that release" -- kept my eye on the used gear at a local store and made some trades along the way. While albums can be expensive, refurbished higher end used gear has stayed relatively affordable and were built to last.

Great video about Precision in Burlington, VT.

I think the album being pressed in this vid is pretty good as well. If you've never heard it, I'd recommend checking it out.
Is this company pressing the new re-releases next month?

Figured I'd ask the question here.

Just this past weekend my turntable started acting up. Everything seems fine when a record starts, but then suddenly I seem to be getting what I can best describe as feedback, or a low droning constant hum of bass? Never had the problem before, not sure whats causing it. I tried another album thinking it might be the issue itself, but after about another 30 seconds into a song, it happened again.

I looked a bit online and one article said it can actually be feedback from vibration of a subwoofer. That doesn't seem to be it though as the subwoofer is quite a distance away and I have not moved it or anything.

One other issue I seemed to have recently is speed variation. Its almost like the rpm is varying on my turntable, the song slowly speeds up, slowly speeds down, almost like you;d expect from a warped album. My wife thinks I am crazy and doesn't hear it, but it is 100% definitely there.

Its not like I have a super high end turntable, its an semi-average pioneer PL-990, but seemed to work fine up until now. Anyone else have similar issues?

Who knows, maybe its time to just scrap this turntable and get another one. This turntable is less than a year old though, so a little perturbed if that's the case.

Suspect that may be a problem with the motor. As it is less than a year old, it should still be under warranty according to bestbuy
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/pioneer-pioneer-pl-990-fully-automatic-stereo-turntable-pl-990/10382475.aspx">http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/pio ... 82475.aspx</a><!-- m -->

Otherwise, maybe there is someone local that can fix it for you?

If not, it may be time for a new one depending on the cost of driving to a shop where someone can fix it, hoping they have the parts in stock & waiting. Or leaving it there for them and making a second trip to pick it up. Shipping a turntable twice won't be cheap, so hopefully it won't come to that.

Yeah, agree with above -- both of those make it sound like a motor issue. Disconnect from the speakers and see if you still hear the hum -- that would point to the motor as the source. You saying it seems to start after a few seconds makes me think it's motor related. The cartridge could then also be picking up the hum and amplifying it.

The hum could be grounding or interference from other electronics, that's the simplest source for that type of sound. My ground on my cables occasionally comes loose and I get a low rumbling hum. Assuming it's grounded, if there are other electronics nearby unplug them and see if the hum persists. Sometimes they can cause interference and it's picked up by the cartridge.

Thanks for the input guys, never thought of the two issues possibly being caused by the same problem, makes sense.

I'll look into the warranty issue, but will probably be chasing a lost cause. I actually bought the turntable with Airmiles back in the fall while they were screaming "use them now or lose them in December". Couldn't find anything else to order, so thought I'd get a new turntable. So much for that.

Who knows though, maybe Pioneer will stand behind the product.

Looks like U2's How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb is getting a vinyl reissue.

I'm not the biggest fan of Songs of Innocence, however I do love me some HTDAAB and NLOTH (hopefully No Line gets a reissue next)

How does Bruce sound these days? Thanks to your post we dug out some of his early pearls; Night Vision, In The Falling Dark, and Dancing in the Dragon's Jaws is Canadian folklore for us!
