I think it is strange that he is playing Artpark - it is a rather large venue, and when they played there outside for free 2 years ago there were not nearly enough people that would have filled up Artparks inside capacity.

On a side note, I've seen dozens of shows at Massey and aside from the Hip I've never seen the whole crowd standing for the entire show (and even with the Hip most people were sitting during the new songs).

Well then it seems we might have a pattern on our hands...

In Winnipeg I make the exact same observation. I have been to dozens of shows at The Burton Cummings Theatre (aka The Walker Theatre) and NEVER, EVER have I seen EVERYBODY standing for the whole show. That was the only time Sam played there, (L@EotW tour) but I was just shocked. Even everyone way high up in "the pews" as I call them.

That's a venue that sees the likes of Matt Good, Queens of the Stone Age, Metric, jeez, just about everybody seems to play there if they aren't quite big enough to sell half an arena.

All that said...one of the most energetic if not THE most energetic shows I've been to, crowd-wise. Totally incredible.

Show Review: Frankie's Innercity - Toledo. OH - July 9, 2011

I have seen Sam Roberts and his band a number of times. I have seen them in small US clubs and larger US theaters with crowds ranging from 1000 to 5000 fans. With the SRB playing in Toledo, only a short 1 hour drive from the Detroit suburbs, I couldn't pass up the chance to see Sam give his all in a small venue setting. I didn't realize what a small setting this actually was.

After parking near the bar, I rounded the corner to get inside. Sam's tour bus was parked directly in front of the main entrance. I thought this was unusual and this is when I saw the front window looking into the bar. Only a thin pane of glass separated pedestrians from the drum set of the headliners.

Once inside I was amazed at how small the bar and its stage actually was. The elevated stage was 10ft. wide and 20 ft. deep. I asked myself how the SRB could fit 5 guys onto this tiny stage? How could a band with Sam's stature play such a small bar? I looked at the walls which were covered with old concert posters advertising shows taking place at this small club featuring some of the huge popular acts of today. Obviously this small club has a storied history! Above the bar I spotted a small 1970's nicotine stained sign stating the room's capacity allowed no more than 195 persons. The bar setting was surreal...I felt like I was going to watch Sam and his great band play in someone's basement!

Two opening acts later, 195 people excitedly awaited Sam's entrance. The band's guitar rack containing about 10 guitars was next to the stage. Any fan could walk right up and examine them closely as they went to the bar for a drink. The band members had to walk through the crowd to get onto the stage. Needless to say, the show was fantastic going from 11:30pm-1am. When the show was over, the band walked through the crowd and out the front door onto the tour bus. There was literally no backstage.

After the show most of the people left except for about 20 die hard fans. All the band members except Sam came off the bus and mingled on the sidewalk. They signed autographs and took pictures as the band equipment was loaded. James Hall, the bassist, missed the show because of wrist surgery he had scheduled for an arthritis problem. Tim Fletcher, from the Canadian band The Stills, filled in for James. It was fantastic to meet the guys and hang out...here are some pictures.

Sam Roberts Band made their debut performance as a headliner at Massey Hall on June 3, 2011. The enthusiastic audience ensured it would be a night that Sam and his bandmates would remember. CBC Radio 2's Canada Live was there to capture the moment to share with you!

As per above mention as to seeing sam robers in a small venue with a 195 person capacity , well thats the way to go. No offence but im so sick of sam roberts. I must have seen him half a dozen times and its always at festivals and its the exact same show over and over agian. If I ever pay to go see him again its going to have to be in a small club where the atmosphere is way different.
