Although i love "real" hockey, i can't wait for the Olympic hockey to start! REALLY looking forward to it. I love watching all events, but men's hockey is definitely the best.

After a few days and more of this betting operation news, it seems clear to me that Janet Gretzky placed bets (which is not illegal) and Wayne is guilty of nothing more than lying in an effort to shield his wife from bad publicity (again, not illegal).
And for this, he is getting crucified by the media.
Pathetic.
Some of these ink-stained wretches are saying Gretzky shoudn't go to Italy because he will be a distraction. Someone oughta tell these guys that THEY are the only reason any sort of distraction exists! Get off his back for cripes' sake. If evidence arises later that he did something illegal, then fine, go after him, but until then give it a frickin' rest!
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the men's Olympic hockey as well... it is going to be great!

Actually J-Monster, In the United States betting on Sports, unless it is online, which links to a Caribbean bank, or is in the State of Nevada, is 100% Illegal.
You can't walk down the street to your local bookie and place bets on football in the US...and that goes for Canada too btw. Fortunately for us we have ProLine as a betting outlet if that happens to be your vice.
Regardless, I couldn't agree more with you more...doesn't it seem like the media almost seems disappointed that Wayne had nothing to do with it??? I don't think it'll be a big deal at the Olympics whatsoever. This whole scandal didn't even make a real blip on the news radars in Europe...or the US for that matter.

The Horrible Esthete Wrote:cferneyh Wrote:Not true Mr. Goulet. There is nothing illegal in Canada or the US with placing wagers. What is illegal is taking a percentage of the wager.
So let me get this straight:
If I place a bet with Johnny Four Fingers down at Pauley's Meat Shop every Sunday of the football season and win every time....
...Are you telling that the $$$$ i win is free and clear, and the only guilty party is the one profiting from bankrolling the ring?
If not, then who cares if the act of making the wager is legal?
I believe that is correct, yes. Placing the bet (and collecting your winnings) is not illegal. Bookmaking is. Even Gretzky's wife is not guilty of any crime. Only Tocchet, that cop from NJ, and the third financier are.

That was my guess too, cfern. I got to thinking about that after I posted it and wondered how collecting your winnings could be legal without claiming it as income. I guess it varies from state to state in the US.
