I do the rolling, you do the details...

With Gord, I think that's always a safe assumtion.

I dunno about that...I know you're big on the "whatever it means to you" mode of interpretation, but if the speaker is referring to twistin' up a spliff, then it would necessarily mean that "the detail" which he is instructing his partner to perform is breaking up the bud. Now, unless this practice carries the nickname of "detail" up there in Canuckville, I'd assume he is in fact referring to painting, where coating the trim and edging are commnly referred to as "detail" work...

I have a boot of Gems in which Gord sings, "I do the rolling, she does the details...that's how you paint a room", I think it is in Hamburg...not 100% sure. Anyways, I never had a clue what Gord was meaning when he says this in Thugs until I heard this boot and it all made sense. That especially holds true after doing all the painting in my house.

I think the reference above is to Gord's observation as follows: "and that, Bavarians, is how you paint a room ..." always loved that line for some reason.

on a completely unrelated note, I just listened to Steeplechase. What a good song.

If you have seen the show on the hip grab bag dvd, you will notice that gordie is almost certainly baked during that show.
When he says "and that, Bavarians, is how you paint a room..." to me it seemed like was because the place was absolutely mesmerized by Last of the Unplucked Gems. And he told them so.
of course, 'details' isnt normally in Unplucked.

(edit: but you just might be right about that painting reference though)

I think Gems is one of The Hip's best songs. However, it is often overlooked as it is only a minute or two long and hidden at the end of RA.

It used to be a staple of mine for including as the last song on mixed tapes I used to make.

Thats why I think Gems is so much better live becaue it's alot longer, they play the instrumentation at the start for at least 2 minutes, and the album version of the song is 2 minutes total. Gord always has amazing rants at the start of that song, it's awesome.

"Think of us, if it'll make it easier, think of us as a fin back whale, 2nd largest creature on the planet, think of yourselves as norwegian and russian whalers, i know i know...its a stretch, just do it, exploding heads, 50 mile and hour harpoons, boats that can pick and process in the high seas, state of the art equipment, fishhhh findin....."

I don't know where that version is from but it is the best version of Gems I have ever heard, coincidentally it has that little part from thugs at the end.

Sorry, couldn't resist the fish humour.

always thought it was about smokin weed and the details being purchasing the beer and pizza or what not.

I'm a convert to the painting the room idea now.

I picture a road trip.

The narrator is twisting up a few doobies.
His partner is trimming and putting filters in them, etc.

smokin' joints while painting is the only explanation for me.

Oh my goodness, this is prolly my favorite off The Nudie CD, along with Pillform 1&2.

Thugs- One of my favorite songs. Someone on songmeanings.net said it was about going over bumpy waters in a relationship, painting a room, getting high off the fumes and having makeup sex Confusedcratch: . Ha that was funny, anyway one of my favorite hip phrases is "Honey are ya mad at cha man?" Say it when a gf is unhappy with me.
