I like the REM comparison from earlier in the thread, but I'd argue this is the New Adventures In HiFi of their catalogue, more so than Green. They'd already had that tipping point, with Day For Night, and still found commercial and critical success where in the eyes of so many they could do no wrong. Then, everything changes. I'd stick The Hip's later period up against REM's any day of the week, mind you.

The Hip do not have an Around the Sun in their catalogue. If I consider M@W the recording low point, it still far outshines the mess that is Around the Sun. It's hard to tell the importance of "the collective" in some bands. REM finished strong, their last two albums were great, but there was some bumpy road after Bill Berry left.

I don't know what word I was hearing in that line, but it most definitely wasn't "olive oil". I had no idea that was the lyric until I read this thread :oops:

That's a great point. If anything, I'd argue Now For Plan A is the closest thing. To me, it just completely missed the mark in so many ways (especially Side 2, with the exception of Goodnight Attawapiskat).

However, in the slightest defence, Around The Sun had Leaving New York on it, which might be REM's most underrated song.
