Wow!!! Awesome songs. The beginning of Can't Wait Anymore reminds me of Use It Up.

I love what I'm hearing so far. I want to say I'm surprised at how goddamn good it sounds, but I think we all knew there was more to Paul than meets the eye. "Fix This Head" is such a killer song. As Emperor Penguin mentioned above, the rawness of the production suits the material perfectly. It actually has a similar feel to The Grand Bounce (not musically, but production-wise). Kind of a stripped down, live-off-the-floor sound. Let's hope this method of recording rubs off on the entire band when they finally get together to work on their new album.

Greg Keelor and Jeff Tweedy come to mind when listening to the album.

This country-restrictive iTunes thing is frustrating. I'd love to buy this! I just don't want a CD, I have enough possessions already, mp3s would be grand! Hopefully it ends up on Amazon at some point, that would be super great. Otherwise I hate to say that I'll just end up pirating it.

What a fantastic album! Paul's singing is awesome and his guitar playing is that of a seasoned pro. Being the rhythm guitarist in the Hip, he's always been kind of in the background along with Gord S. and Johnny, keeping the music grounded while giving Gord and Robby the space to let loose. But he really gets to shine on this album. The songs are all Paul of course, but I also hear bits of Jeff Tweedy, The Cash Brothers, Greg Keelor, Neil Young, and Warren Zevon.

The Tragically Hip’s Paul Langlois “Accidentally” Records Solo Album
by Alan Cross | December 7, 2010 4:23 pm
It’s called Fix This Head–and it wasn’t really supposed to happen, apparently.
“This record is a surprise to me. I didn’t know I was making a record until I was almost finished.” So says Langlois, who trails behind bandmate Gord Downey in the solo album category. From the press release:
“In early 2010 Paul booked the Hip’s studio (The Bathouse), and their engineer, Aaron Holmberg, for a few days with the intention of experimenting in the studio on some tracks he’d been working on at home. He began with a couple of songs,Shattered Down and If I Were You, that he had already recorded the guitar and bass over a drum machine and really wanted to record real drums.
“The songs were put on loops so he would play through them until he felt like he had a great take. In hindsight he probably would have called up some friends to come in and perform some of the instruments but he was still in the early songwriting process and enjoyed keeping his work to himself.
“Paul performed all of the instruments on the album and for the majority of it he recorded the instruments first and then would record the vocals. After the first session he left the studio with 5 songs under his belt. In May he returned to do a few more tracks and then come September completed the record.
“’By the time I went in for those last couple of days of recording, I’d come to realize that I was actually trying to make a record, not just recording songs. And I may have been the last to know’”
Fix This Head is now out on iTunes and in stores through MapleMusic. Sharp-eared Hip fans might have thought something was up on Hockey Night in Canada a while back when a song called “Can’t Wait Anymore” showed up out of nowhere. Here’s the video.
