MAN! I wish I was closer to London. I would've jumped on those; then see the setlist! WHY, WHY can't The Hip do something even a little like this:
LONDON, ONTARIO. CA.
JULY 16, 2013
Budweiser Gardens
SET LIST
01. Present Tense
02. Nothing Man
03. Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town
04. London Calling-(Jones, Strummer)/Corduroy
(band plays verse music while Ed sings “London Calling” a few times rather than actual lyrics. Corduroy bridge is rearranged slightly)
05. Mind Your Manners (new song from “Lightning Bolt”)
06. Got Some
07. Given To Fly
08. Sad
09. Alone
10. Even Flow (instead of “never vote republican” Ed says something about Chelios)
(Ed reminisces about touring Canada with Mudhoney and how great it was.. When driving into London for this show he remembered everything about the city. He jokes that while looking up facts about the city he saw a wi-fi network called “Dundas Hookers On Crack” which he thought “London is keeping their sense of humor until he went walking around the hotel and thought there might be something to it. He goes on to say that while Stone was out for a run around the city a guy began smashing a phone against a phone booth while he went past. “This next song is for all the Dundas hookers on crack”.)
11. I Got Shit
12. In Hiding
13. Lukin
14. Not For You/Modern Girl-(Sleater Kinney)
15. Black
16. Porch (light globes come down from the lighting truss and Ed swings on one a bit.)
Encore Break: Ed introduces the band. “We don’t have to work tomorrow so I will have to check but I think we can stay as late as we want to tonight here in the lovely ‘Budweiser Gardens’. Shit beer but a good building.”
17. Last Exit
18. Last Kiss-(Cochran) (played to audience behind the stage. Matt plays a cocktail kit facing the back and the rest of the band joins him there.)
(For this part of the show the guys sit down closer together. The band has a new stage set up and lighting rig. During the first encore a giant “chaos bird” that appears to be made of scrap metal with lights strung throughout it descends from the truss to hang just above the band. There are orange lamps all over the stage and larger globes that descend and rise into the lighting truss. )
19. Parachutes
20. Man Of The Hour
21. Just Breathe
22. Daughter
23. Unthought Known
24. Do The Evolution
Encore Break 2
(Ed re-introduces Jeff and Stone who have switched instruments. He thanks the audience for remaining friends in the seven years since the band has played here)
25. Smile
Ed talks about his hockey playing friends here tonight Tie Dome and hall of famer Chris Chelios. He also dedicates the next song to the “guy in the yellow shirt from Denmark for coming all the way out here and requesting a good song”
26. Brain Of J
27. Better Man
28. Alive
29. Rockin’ In The Free World-(Young)
30. Indifference
It was all kinds of awesome. A lot of energy, at times it felt like the band was pummelling us. Which of course, is a good thing. I know it's been said before, but this band is light years ahead of everyone else.
Last night's show easily makes my top ten list, maybe top three. This band delivers the goods, no holds barred. Left the building with a massive smile on my face. Set list was fantastic and the debut of Mind Your Manners was absolutely delightful. Studio version of this song spanks, but live its as Josh stated, like the band was pummeling us. Blissful punishment. Show could have easily ended with "Do The Evolution" and everyone in the building would have walked away happy. And then nothing less than six additional tunes, closing with Alive, Keep on Rockin' in the Free World, and Indifference.
We were first row balcony almost on top of the stage. BG is a fantastic venue, especially for a band like PJ. We did get a scare when the guy sitting behind my wife fell over, and I think if it wasn't for her and the guy beside her he might have gone right over the rail. Dude was wasted and got very lucky not dropping 30 feet to the first level.
We met a bunch of people making the drive to Chicago which is shaping up to be quite the spectacle. Consider yourself extremely lucky if you are attending.
Quintessential rock concert moment: Outro for "Rockin' in the Free World" (I believe), Eddie hoists mic stand into the standard "ready-to-smash-hardware-on stage-floor-position" and perfectly times the swing and hit with the crescendo conclusion of the song. The base of the mic stand partially breaks through the stage and the stand is left impaled at low angle to the floor. He points at it and starts laughing for a perfect ending to the song. Classic. I would live to see a picture of that anchored mic stand!
Here is "Mind Your Manners" and "Got Some" linked by GetALife to the PJ Forum, and posted to YouTube by VideoGremmie:
I'm sure the PJ fans here read about what went down at Wrigley last night. 7 songs in, the band puts the show on hold due to impending weather/lightning. Vedder assured they'd be gone for 30 mins...nearly 2.5 hours later, they were back, and didn't leave until 2 AM, performing the full set (3 hours total of music) that they promised us would happen.
I'll have a full review later, but on a night when both The Hip and PJ experienced terrible weather, I'm reminded that there are bands, and then there's Pearl Jam. A league of their own.
In The Hips defense for the weather and the Buffalo show:
1. The impending weather evacuation was for the crowds safety
2. The Hip's gear was toasted
3. The weather was so bad there are still 1000's without power here today
4. Damn I wish The Hip would play sets like Pearl Jam does

Hey, while I agree with yer fourth point, in no way was my post meant to slag on The Hip whatsoever. I suppose I should have mentioned that both Bjork and Phish, both playing last night in Chicago, cancelled their shows. Pearl Jam soldiered on.
This band is still immature in many ways. The Hip are much more mature musically and spiritually than Pearl Jam. I am the embodiment of a Rock n Roll musician...I can tell you: there is,inevitably, one striving outcome for all vehement musicians; The discovery of silence.
Pearl Jam is yet on the journey of this discovery. I can see that they will not make it using their present approach. I do see progress from the Hip though. I hear the beginnings of Silence in their music. And their approach is turning more and more inward, toward an internal point of reference; where Silence (coming from the Source) resides.
So, uh, that was one hell of a weekend. Pearl Jam at Wrigley was a special experience; it's hard, after seeing a band thirty-four times, to be genuinely shocked by anything they do, but I was pretty much was shocked by Pearl Jam's coming back to play until 2am. I thought Wrigley would be hits-heavy; never in a million years did I expect two premieres (forget live debuts: no one outside the band's inner circles had heard those songs until Friday), "Hold On," or "Bugs," not to mention two of the best versions of "Even Flow" and "Rearviewmirror" I've ever heard. But if anyone's wondering why some of us love Pearl Jam as much as we do: find the version of "Come Back" from Friday night. It's far from my favourite song...but the dedication was beautiful, and the fact that lighting was coming down during the song was something only God could've scripted.
London was great. Wrigley was special. As The Heron Outside put it, "I'm reminded that there are bands, and then there's Pearl Jam. A league of their own."
Is there a better rock n' roll band in the world right now? Don't think so. The Hip are still my sentimental favorite of course, but their recent string of boring, same-old setlists and Gord's annoying vocals (or "anti-singing" as I like to call it) have knocked them down a couple of pegs in regards to their live show. In terms of overall performance and setlist variation, Pearl Jam are the golden standard these days.

I was talking to a (non-die-hard-Pearl-Jam-tour-following) friend about this the other week: Pearl Jam makes you feel proud to be a fan of theirs. For the most part they simply do things the right way; that's certainly not a condemnation of other bands, but in my mind the way Pearl Jam conducts business is a cut above. I genuinely don't think anyone else, with the probable exception of Springsteen, comes back out and plays till 2am under those circumstances, nor challenges its audience with new songs, rarities, an accordion song, a Mother Love Bone cover...AND PULLS IT OFF. Afterwards I was exhausted and it took us over two hours to get back to our hotel...but today, three days after that, I'm not remembering that so much as the three-hour show. I will speak of this night in hushed tones now and forever more.
Wow....Pearl Jam, really? "To each their own" has never been a more suitable phrase. Richard Ashcroft, Michael Hutchence, Perry Farrell, Gordon Downie, Chris Cornell, PJ Harvey,....and the list goes on.
Pearl Jam.....that is all you got to represent the talent of musicians in our Age. Ouch!

Yes, quite a stretch between Chris Cornell \ Soundgarden and Pearl Jam! Why even bother posting a criticism like that? I happen to like all the artists you mention above, but if I didn't I wouldn't crap on them just because I don't "get them".

The first point of wisdom is to discern that which is false; the second, to know that which is true.

For those that have ears to hear.....
From the artists I mentioned, Do you see why I might have mentioned them and not included Pearl Jam?
Jim Morrison, Shannon Hoon???? Pearl Jam....not yet.
