MLB - 2008
#61

I can't recall Halladay ever having serious arm problems. The most time he ever missed for an injury was in 2005, but that was his leg. Last year he was healthy all year except for a few weeks near the start of the season with appendicitis. I'm not too worried about them over-working Halladay (knock on wood), as he gets through games pretty efficiently (his 13.05 pitches per inning is the best in MLB so far this season).

Don't get me started on Gibbons' bullpen management though, it's been an issue since the day he was hired.

And on a similar topic, here's a great Joe Posnanski column on Gibbons' late-inning strategy Friday night in KC:

I hate the Jays but I really feel for Halladay, the guy is an amazing pitcher and if he goes his career in toronto and does a sundin that will be a dissapointment, the guy could easily win a world series with a top team. I wonder how long before the Yankees try to steal him away?

Great game the other night, love seeing a pitching duel go down to the wire like that, unfortunatley someone has to lose, thankfully it was the other team...

GO RED SOX!

Imagine a world before the "beginning was the word.”

haha thanks, I enjoyed that. The last two innings of that game were just a calamity of errors for Gibbons. Leaving his starter in too long, not putting John MacDonald into the game at short as a defensive replacement for Eckstein when you're up 2 runs late in the game, and to top it off, the intentional walk to Tony Pena.

Hey, here's a radical idea, Blue Jays players in the non-pitcher category.

That's great.

I love writers who can opine about baseball and be both valid and entertaining at the same time.

I knew I'd enjoy it when I saw his blog's tagline:

Eleven. Exactly. One Louder.

Long live Nigel.

Poz is a fantastic (and prolific) writer. Worth bookmarking his site. One of the best parts of being a Royals' fan is getting to read his KC Star columns about the team, even in all these losing years. And, esthete, as Reds' fan, you'll be glad to know his next book is about the 1975 Reds (his previous one is about his travels with Buck O'Neil). Here's his latest update on the project:

If I ever get the urge to drive my car into a group of people (after drinking, no less) because of a sports fan fight, I hope someone slaps me, punches me in the head, whatever it takes to make me smarten up and stop.

Seriously.

Speaking of great pitching performances, Roy Halladay turned in his 4th consecutive complete game tonight (no one else in MLB has more than one CG this season). Remarkably, he's taken the loss in the last 3 of those games. :nooooo

Vernon Wells needs to improve drastically.. I think he's been their worst player the last 3 weeks. And not just at the plate, he looks pretty bad in the outfield as well, and I'm not just talking about his game costing blunder tonight, he's looked lazy out there all year.

He's overpaid. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt when he signed his big contract because he was coming off of a big year, but no more. Wells is vastly overrated. I'm glad that Halladay was cursing after Vernon nonchalantly bobbled that game winning single agains the Sox several games ago. Wells shouldn't be a max player. It's as simple as that.

When I saw this post I wondered what the details of his contract were to make you think he's overpaid, so I looked it up:

-- $25.5M signing bonus (paid in 3 $8.5M installments, 2008-10)

-- 08:$0.5M, 09:$1.5M, 10:$12.5M, 11:$23M, 12:$21M, 13:$21M, 14:$21M

:what :what

Good god, that might be the worst contract I've ever seen. In his 6 full seasons, he hasn't hit 35 HRs once, has driven in 110 or more RBI just once, and hits .281/.331/.476 for his career?

 Ouch.

In a parallel universe, where GMs win awards for handing out stinky contracts, JP Ricciardi is considered a true genius. Actually, I know of that universe - it is called "JP Ricciardi's Brain".

It's too early to judge whether re-signing Wells was a good decision by JP - he's still got 6 years left to prove himself worthwhile. At this point though I will concede it's looking like it could be a major bust.
