This is a Really bad year for coaches in general. Between the NHL, NFL, & the NBA, there are a lot of people looking for work out there...

There could be another coaching fatality shortly too...it wouldn't surprise me a bit if Tom Renney is go next.

I can't say i'm surprised at all that Renney was let go today, the writing was definitely on the wall. I said to a friend after last nighs loss that one of two things would happen today, either Renney was let go, or Sean Avery was placed on re-entry waivers.

I liked Renney & i think he's a good coach, but i think it was time for a change. It's definitely not his fault that the Rangers are in the position they are in, they just simply aren't a good team. Glen Sather has made some bad signings (and non-signings) the past few off-seasons, and it's put the team in a tough position.

According to all the sports networks, John Torterella appears to be the front runner. I like Torts during his previous stint in NY, and i was a fan of his during his TB days (i always followed them close b/c of Brad Richards). His style would be a huge contrast to that of Renney's, they have vastly differently personalities, and while Renney plays a tight, defensive system, Torts likes to play more of an offensive game.
I'm not sure if Sean Avery is still in the cards or not, but it'd be interesting to see how a potential Torterella/Avery relationship would work

I'll tell you exactly how that relationship will work out...it won't. Torts doesn't suffer fools lightly, I just don't see him coaching a team with Avery on his bench...and I respect that. Keep the knob in the minors.

I always thought that Steve Ludzig should get another chance behind the bench. He was in a bad situation in Tampa, but I think he would be a good coach!

Combine that with another Flames win last night, and the Canuckleheads are now 10 points back of Calgary in the Northwest. All is right with the universe.

Ryan Whitney to Anaheim for Chris Kunitz & Eric Tangradi. I'm not really surprised that they traded Whitney, he's been rumored to be on the market for a while now, but still, i wasn't really expecting it to happen today.

Expect the Chris Pronger trade rumors to heat up even more...

While the Rangers are still winless, at least they are more entertaining to watch under Tortorella. They badly outplayed the Panthers last night, and had ample opportunties, but just couldn't bury them. If they keep putting forth an effort like they did last night though, the goals will come.
Wade Redden has 2 of his best games as a Ranger under Tortorella...so hopefully he keeps it up.

Ilya Kovalchuk has been on fire lately, with 11 goals in 9 games (and 21 in 24 if you go back further). Which is great for me, if Ilya Kovalchuk & Nicklas Backstrom can outscore Ryan Getzlaf & Marian Hossa the rest of the season, i'll win my pool ($500)
