WASHINGTON - Hall of Famer Mike Gartner's No. 11 was retired by the Washington Capitals on Sunday night before their game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, another of his former NHL teams.

Alex Ovechkin and the other current Capitals all took to the ice for pre-game warmups wearing white throwback uniforms with Gartner's number in blue, although each player had his own last name stitched across the shoulders. The jerseys were to be auctioned off during the game to benefit a charity chosen by Gartner.

"I'd like to thank the players for wearing the No. 11 tonight. It was tremendous," Gartner said during the ceremony, which delayed the start of the game by about 25 minutes. "I certainly know if there were five No. 11s on the ice at the same time, there wouldn't be enough puck to go around."

Gartner - known for his skating speed and scoring ability, as well as his trademark moustache - is the fourth member of the Capitals to have his number retired. He ranks second in club history in goals (397), assists (392) and points, having played 10 of his 19 NHL seasons in Washington.

He finished with 708 goals, sixth in NHL history, and a record 17 seasons with at least 30 goals. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001.

"You made us exhausted trying to keep up with you, I'll tell you that," said Wes Jarvis, Gartner's former Capitals teammate and business partner. "Garts, you loved to score - slap shots, wrist shots, tip-ins. You did it in all ways."

I was glad to see this too. I got to meet Gartner once when I was a kid and he was playing in Toronto. I played against his son in a baseball tournament in Stoufville, ON and was able to get his autograph.

so last night in the NHL I saw 3 things I never ever thought I'd see in an NHL game. Sidney Crosby dropping the mitts and attacking a guy right off of a face off, a fight in the Dallas Edmonton game where 2 guys wanted to fight one guy, and the Dallas player didn't know who to go with, and Alexander Semin hilariously embarrasing himself by flailing his arms like a girl on Marc Staal.

The Semin "fight" was hilarious, i can't say i've ever seen that punching strategy in a hockey fight before
I can't remember the players involved, but in a Rangers game a couple weeks ago there was a fight where the opposing teams player (the Ranger involved might of been Aaron Voros...but i'm not really sure) just threw body jab after body jab, dozens of them, it was a rather unusually looking fight as well.

Final score: Flames 5, Sharks 2. Nothing feels better than laying a total beat-down on one of the NHL's elite teams. Yup, the Flames are on a roll.

Here are some things that I know about the Canucks:

-Mason Raymond sucks. He can skate fast, but he's dumb as f*ck and is useless.
-It's clear that, like always, the team goes as Luongo goes. The Canucks don't have a very good roster.
-Edler completely sucks this season.
-Bieksa completely sucks and is a huge defensive liability.
-Pyatt and Hansen are so medicore and could be replaced by just about anyone and nobody would notice a difference.
-The Canucks are boring as hell to watch again this year.
-Demitra has been a disappointment.
-Kesler is a third line checker and Vancouver fans act like he's a superstar. It's a joke. To think that the Canucks could have had Jeff Carter for Kesler and wouldn't do it. :nooooo
-Vigneault is a moron. I don't care if he won the Jack Adams.
-Shane O'brien is actaully not bad and worth his contract more than most players on the roster.
-Wellwood is also worth more than what he's getting paid. He has the best hands on the team.
-Hordichuck has been a disappointment. He loses most of his fight, but the biggest disappointment has been his general attitude. He doesn't fight all that much and doesn't really stick up for his teammates all that much. He must think he's a scorer or something. cratch:
-Sami Salo is like the Tin Man and can't stay healthy. Not a big deal, though, because he's not very good anyway.

I have a feeling when Luongo comes back, the 'Nucks are gonna start playing a whole lot better. The guy is their leader afterall. And it's going to take Sundin a lot more than four games to get himself back in the groove. He still looks very rusty. As a Flames fan I absolutely despise the Nucks and I hope they fail miserably (I think I hate them more than the Oilers), but sadly I don't think that'll happen. If they can get their shit together, they could potentially be very dangerous once the playoffs start, especially with Luongo in net. I'm not counting them out just yet. But I gotta say, it sure feels good being 7 points up on them with 3 games in hand. Ahh, life is good.

You mean a guy who hasn't played since last season is a little bit out of shape, that's ridiculous.. you're right the media can be atrocious. At least out there you don't have to listen to Nick Kypreos, he might be the dumbest person on television of any genre. I also think he has some mental issues, he flies off the handle sometimes and gets extremely angry over absolutely nothing.
