I liked the self-titled EP alot when it came out. It's not my favourite Hip recording perhaps, but I have fond associations with Last American Exit, Smalltown Bringdown and I'm a Werewolf.

I can't rank the Hip CDs, mostly because I don't tend to think of the music as coming from a specific CD - the age of the MP3, I guess. I listen to all the Hip tunes in a random scramble and have gotten to the point where I don't associate the songs with CDs. Much.

I think Killing Time is one of the Hip's coolest songs, and it's a shame they don't play it. Actually, it's a shame they don't play anything from that album just for fun at their shows.

Werewolf or Highway girl would be an amazing encore song.

If you took the 8 worst songs from John Mellecamp's John Cougar, Nothin' Matters and What If It Did, and American Fool and put them on a record, you'd have the Hip EP Part Deux.

1 Day For Night - My favourite album of all time. Gord's gritty stories over equally gritty, layered guitars brilliantly intertwined.

2 Phantom Power - The Hip do folk rock, and do it damn well. One intelligent, pretty story song after another.

3 Fully Completely - The Hip move out of the bar and into the stadium. Gord's lyrics take a leap forward in sophistication, the band makes a heavier, darker record.

4 In Between Evolution - The hip not only return to rocking out, they make a raw, live in the studio record without some of the trademark subtle interplay. It's a political record (!), yet fun and intimate. A great return to form.

5 Trouble in the Henhouse - Dark record in the vein of Day for Night, but mellower and more introspective. A little cleverness and humour sneaking in among more songs about WWII, hockey and the Canadian landscape.

6 Road Apples - Their greatest straight-up rock album in my view, and accomplished with guitars just this side of totally clean! The band is more versatile than on Up to Here.

7 In Violet Light - Sortof a sequel to the folk rock of Phantom Power, Gord at a lyric writing peak. The band was feeling a bit experimental, some of the playing is more about unusual chords and technically proficient playing than mood. I really hate the thin-sounding production job, which ruins some of the more upbeat numbers in my oppinion.

8 Up to Here-Classic debut, their most straightforward record if you don't count the EP. One first-rate blues rock song after another.

9 Music at Work-The Hip with digital technology and a lot of colaborators, self-producing some of Gord's most offbeat songs. Contains some great sounding playing and some great songs, all beautifully produced, but it's arguably their least accessible record from the point of view of melody and lyrics.

10 EP-This almost shouldn't count as an official record. Good, but not even in the same league as the follow up Up to Here. The version of Highway Girl not half as good as the legendary live version.

not unhard for me...

1) Day For Night - Dark from end to end, amazing from end to end. The beauty of even the heaviest songs is something hard to achieve, but its here in aces.

2) Road Apples - Definately their best rocker, alternates as my favourite depending on mood.

3) In Violet Light - I dont see why this album gets so much shit panned on it, i like the mellow vibe to it, and the Dark Canuck is one of their best closers

4) Fully Completely - If it werent for the mixing, id probably like this album more, though it is an absolute classic.

5) Phantom Power - their most intelligent album

6) TTH - im sorry, i love it

7) Up to Here - i know that its sacrilidgeous to say that the debut is better than this album, but they are about on par. Another consistant rocker, though not as all around good as RA.

8) Music @ Work: Meh

9) Trouble at the Henhouse: Ive said it before to much dispute, but there are only maybe 5 songs i like on it (ABAC, Springtime, Don't wake daddy, sherpa and one wildcard). Gift shop is a lamer, more boring knock off of Nautical, though the lyrics are pretty good.
