Someone mentioned Black Label Society- wow, how much further across the spectrum those two bands are. It drives me crazy when I ask someone why they like a band and all they can regurgitate at me something like "because they ROCK" or some such nonsense. No real meaning behind lyrics; no substance. Just ear bursting riffs. Of course I like those songs from time to time, but they just don't, you know, "do it for me".

You missed the point on the BLS comment. My point was that I love the Hip becasue they are creative. BLS is also a fav but I am starting to not like them because every song is a carbon copy of itself.
I am a person that the tone of the music is more important tan the lyrics so I like a lot of stuff. Kieth Urban anyone? haha

Er, I'm sorry I came off that way; I really felt it would be read like that and I should have edited it- I meant no disrespect to anyone's choice of music!

I only meant to make reference to myself. The Hip are just that personal to me is all. Plus I share an office with a huge BLS fan and he's a douchebag LOL... maybe BLS was the one band that shouldn't have been used as an example LOL.

haha nah its cool. most BLS fans are douche bags lol. I hang out on their board because I like the people, not really the band so much anymore.

Will be interesting to hear a new album.

I love the Hip- and it goes far beyond the music. It's the introspection it gives me; it makes me think on a different level and brings my attention to issues I might not have been aware of, or gives me fresh perspective......it gives me a unique sense of being Canadian and each and every time it feels like its reaching out to me on a personal level.

This all just goes to show why this band really is one of the all-time greats.

I say that because as an American, all the "Canadiana" (yes i think i made that word up) pertaining to this band and its music does not factor into my love for it. While I acknowledge and respect the cultural significance that intertwines the artist and the art, it's just not something that "speaks" to an Ohio farm boy.

And I do foster an immense respect for the lyrical content, poeticism, wordsmithery, intellect, and conscientiousness Downie injects. But for me, this aspect merely enhances and accessorizes what is by far most improtant to me: the music. In fact, the qualities and characteristics of Downie's contributions seem to be impressed upon the music itself -- or perhaps I subconsciously project those characteristics onto the music? I can't be sure, but either way, it gives the entire composition a most sublime quality, an esoteric edge that truly can "take me away".

When an artist's content can can take one listener on a journey inside herself, while it's form can take another on a virtual trip outside himself, then you know you are dealing with somthing very rare and very precious.

I personally don't think the boys would release something that isn't, in essence, The Tragically Hip.

I'd even go so far to say that such a release is a physical impossibility.

I hope you didn't just make it up, I based my entire english portfolio on the term last semester.

Taking Canadian history and social sciences classes while being a Hip fan is great. At least once a week a teacher will say something that will cause something to click in my head, and all of the sudden a song's lyrics will make sense. Hell, last year I wrote a term paper on Looking For a Place to Happen and a mid-term on Putting Down.
