Now...
I can respect people who support parties like the NDP or Green (let's leave the corrupt Liberals out of this right now) instead of Conservative because they believe in their policies and genuinely feel they will be better for Canada. I may not agree with them, but I can respect them for having that belief, taking that stand and wanting to make Canada better.
But for people who buy into the tired lie that Conservatives are evil (I'm talking to you, Coneycat, bean... and especially you DC, ya nutbar)... let me disabuse you of that notion right now. Their policy platform which they released earlier this year has a lot of great ideas, including:
* democratic accountability through free votes in the House
* debt repayment plan to reduce future interest payments to free up money for governments to use for other pressing concerns or to return to Canadians via tax relief
* tax fairness for all families whether single or dual-income
* commitments to improve the environment via clean air, water and alternative energy initiatives
* stable health care funding to provinces and allow full flexibility of delivery to ensure all Canadians have timely access for their health care needs
* will NOT support changing legislation on abortion
* respecting the traditional definition of marriage while granting civil unions and full equal rights to gay couples (equivalent legislation to most liberal European societies)
* allow parents to determine care needs of their children
* supports gender equality
* clear policies to support seniors, a growing component of our population
* change criminal justice system to prevent crime and emphasize the rights and needs of victims
* support of bilingualism and multiculturalism
* fair immigration policies, including process for skilled immigrants to obtain equivalency for their international skills, training and experience
Doesn't sound too scary, does it? The full policy book is here, and I would encourage everyone to check it out...

I would be remiss if I did not add that the fact I feel the need to do this speaks to one of the failures of the Conservative Party right now... their inability to promote, explain and sell their policies to Canadians. Repeating the fact that Liberals are corrupt, while true, is not enough to connect with many Canadians, which is why polls show that the support levels of the Conservatives have remained stagnant. Perhaps their will be a silver lining in the lost vote of confidence tonight... maybe Harper and his team will get moving and promote their policies to Canadians.
Give them a reason to vote FOR your party, instead of just reasons to NOT vote for someone else... whether the Conservatives can successfully manage that will be the deciding factor in the next election, whenever it is.
