Phantom Power

*too soon to for Man Machine Poem

Really enjoyed reading others’ ranking and opinions. Amazing the diversity of rankings – shows how amazing The Hip and their music is, and how they have touch so many in so many different ways.

Ranking is my best guess at how many times I have listened to each album since I discovered The Hip back in 1992 during a cross-Canada road trip with my brother (Thanks Michael!!). Figure number times listen is a good method for ranking the albums. Btw: my 2nd most listened to band doesn’t come close to The Hip in number of listens.

Having a really hard time placing UTH, RA, and FC. They were all great albums but they feel a little aged to me I guess. Could definitely get them at the top of anyone's list.

Has anyone ever removed the 3 tracks you love the least and insertered the 3 out takes, that were released through The Hip Club? Different listen for sure.

There aren't any I would remove, but adding those 3 would have made the album even better. Problem Bears and Forest Edge for sure. Those are two of my favourite Hip songs of all time, b-side or otherwise.

I have done this! Makes a great album even better. But wait, what's the 3rd outtake? Problem Bears and Forest Edge are the only two I can think of...

Ultra Mundane. Was never a huge fan of that one.

Another tiered ranking:

Tier 1:
Phantom Power
To me, this is a perfect album. I put this in the company of Dark Side of the Moon and Abbey Road. It contains several of my absolute favorite Hip songs, including my all-time fave, Escape is at Hand for the Travellin' man. There isn't a song that I don't love on the record. Absolutely flawless from start to finish.

Tier 2:
Fully Completely
Day For Night
Man Machine Poem

Tier 3:
Music@Work
Road Apples

Tier 4:
Trouble at the Henhouse
In Violet Light

Tier 5:
Up To Here
World Container
In Between Evolution

Tier 6:
EP

Not ranked:
Now for Plan A

Very interesting. Can't say I'm that surprised by it, DFN has always sort of been the consensus number one among a lot of people. Really nice to see Man Machine Poem so high. I really think this is some of their finest work and an all time classic Hip album that deserves to be up there with the heavyweights.

I'm happy to see that as well. If MMP is indeed their last one, then it's a brilliant album to go out on. I think it easily ranks up there with their finest work.

Thanks Marcus! Can't really argue with that top 5.
Biggest surprise for me is seeing World Container ahead of WatS and NFPA, I had no idea it was loved!

Totally agree. I love Music at Work, the album, but it fades at the end. Problem Bears and Forest Edge replacing Freak Turbulence/Wild Mountain Honey/Train Overnight would've nailed it for me. I also heard Get Back Again for the first time around the time M@W was released. I think it was recorded earlier but those three songs would've been incredible on the album.

This one could get a lot more love. It's so weird to me. I can't really get where The Hip were at this moment. Any ideas ?

the peak of their creativity, friend. I suspect a lot of weed was involved.
