srb Wrote:Anyone here catch the Winter Classic outdoor game today?

Wish the ice had held up a little better, but despite the lengthy stoppages, it was a good game.

I hope they make these outdoor games an annual thing.

I watched bits and pieces, and overall thought it was an okay game...but it was missing a bit of the mystique that the Heritage Classic brought a few years back. Maybe it was because I was at that game and I'm a Habs fan, or maybe cause it was the first time. I just didn't feel this game like I did the Heritage. They may have had more people at this game, but the fist outdoor game had an inexplicable feeling to it.

I still think an Islanders/Rangers at Yankee or Shea would be the best Smile

As a diehard Rangers fan, that would be unreal Sean! I'm all for it!

I watched all of the Outdoor Classic yesterday & loved every minute of it. It was too bad it had to snow as much as it did & yes they did have some minor troubles with the ice, but overall i thought it went over extremely well. The game itself was pretty good, I was hoping the hometown Sabres could get the win though. And even know i knew it wouldn't happen, i was hoping maybe we could see George Laraque/Andre Peters at center ice in front of 72,000 people! I'm all for turning this into an annual event.

Of the 71, 000 spectators, how many do you think came from Ontario?

OK, I know many of you here are opposed to the shootout to decide games in the NHL, and I'm leaning towards that, but you cannot deny the excitement and jaw-dropping factor that is involved. Take a look at this, the top ten best shootout goals from the 2005-06 season:

shootouts still suck, and i'm worried that the more the press gets behind it, and loves it, the bigger the chance of the shootouts ending up in the playoffs..shootouts should be used only in video games, and even then...they suck

That's six shutouts for Luongo now. :thumb:

Now, we all know that unless the Canucks get some players who can score, they will not be serious Cup contenders. However, it's amusing to watch them do so well with a great goalie and an IHL roster. Of course, I guess they aren't too far behind most other teams since, IMO, about 70%to 80% of NHL players aren't very good hockey players. I am a tall, skinny recreational hockey player and I'm convinced that I could score more goals than Trevor Linden, Jeff Cowan, Isbister in the run of a season. :rambo:

I know we already knew this, but here's another example of just how deep the problem is in Toronto:

Confusedcratch:

I'd love to know the math behind that. The Leafs could hold an optional practice at an outdoor rink and find a way to make money.

Woohoo, Flames win again! Iggy with another 3 point night as per usual. 5 wins in a row and they're 12-1-4 in their last 17 games. This team is on one hell of a roll. I just hope they can keep it up for the rest of the season.

agreed. sure, it's "exciting" but it's gimmicky "excitement."
the xfl comes to mind.
i want my excitement to be authentic.
and it's a joke of a way to award an extra point.
soccer should ditch shootouts too.

Agreed. The Italian victory in the last World Cup wasn't that exciting in the shootout...I find golden goal a lot more exciting in hockey and in soccer...which is why I love the continuous OT in the playoffs
