Happy Hockey Day! (almost)

Should be a great day of hockey as usual, here's the schedule on CBC..

Ottawa at Montreal 2:00 p.m.
Toronto at Edmonton 7:00 p.m.
Calgary at Vancouver 10:00 p.m.

Anybody else going to watch all 3 games? I will be, but my wife is leaving the house she said she can't take that much hockey in one day. :lol: I can't blame her I guess, but she will watch the Habs game with me, she's a Habs fan too. But man they stink right now, they need a shakeup or something, this losing streak needs to end or were going to find ourselves out of the playoff race in a hurry. I haven't given up on them yet, but a trade might be in order soon, I can't see them firing Julien this early on, but if they did I probably wouldn't be that upset, either way we need help bad.

Anyway, it should be a fun day, lots of beer, food and hockey. Enjoy the hockey all! :thumb:

I agree 100%, Ive never understood there logic in hiring these would-be coaches, just because they happen to be french. We definintely need someone who has proven himself and gets results, and it shouldn't matter what languages he speaks, I dont care if he's Chinese as long as he gets the best out of the team and knows how to win. Pat Burns was the last Habs coach in my mind that really got alot out of the team and wasn't afraid to say it like it is and kick some asses. I think the players have respect for a guy like that, whether you liked him or not, Julien doesn't strike me as a big motivator, or that type of coach. This team is underachieving and it needs a kick in the ass. And not to forget Demers, he did get us a cup in 93, and I liked him as a coach.

I just saw two guys on Sportsnet pick Crosby as their rookie of the year so far. They said Sidney has carried his Penguins. Why do they even bother giving their opinion? Do they even consider non Canadian players? Do they really believe in their opinion? Do they really think Crosby is playing better than Ovechkin? If Crosby is carrying the Pens, what is Ovechkin doing for the Caps? In fact, the Capitals have more wins than the Penguins so far. The next leading point getter on the Caps is Halpern with 22, that's right 22 POINTS. Both Crosby and Ovechkin are pretty even but to declare that Crosby has been better, like the two guys on Sportsnet did, is just funny. More of that bias coming out I guess. I wonder what they think about two foreigners being number 1 and 2 in points.

I just watched the best game the NHL has seen this year...Flames 1 Leafs 0...who says you need lots of scoring to produce entertainment. I don't think I've ever seen a more stunning goaltending performance than what I witnessed tonight.

That was my first time watching the Flames this year and their puck pursuit and offensive zone pressure is relentless, so is their penalty kill. That Phaneuf kid is going to be a superstar for years and years to come, hard to believe he's only 20!!

Leafs....great job tonight!!! you just got beat by a really hot goalie.

Kipprusoff could be in the running for the ugliest player in the league award...and I'm not quite sure what part of Finland the "Kipprusoff" family is from but it must be near the Russian embassy...cuz it sure don't sound Finn to me. I'm just bitter tonight, that's all...at least I've got him in the Hipbase hockey pool...he's made me 65 points this year, which is phenomenal for a goalie!!!

It's one thing to lose when you played poorly, but when you lose after playing a good game, it's very frustrating! But all credit to the Flames and Kiprusoff... when the Flames are on they are one tough team to beat. I thought both teams played very well, and both goalies played exceptionally well. When that happens, sometimes a fluke goal is all it takes to win, and tonight the Flames got it, but the Leafs could have just as easily got it if the bounces were different.

Oh well, can't win 'em all. Like I said, well done to the Flames, and enjoy the win, direwolf. I actually like all the Western Canadian teams, so I don't enjoy seeing them lose (except against the Leafs of course) like you enjoy seeing the Oilers, Canucks and Leafs lose, but that's OK. Don't get me started on the Sens and Habs, though! :x

You know the worst part about this? Leafs and Flames may not play each other for three years now because of the scheduling. I like the idea of more divisional games, but to sacrifice games like the Leafs playing the Western Canadian teams is ridiculous!

Agreed! I like the extra divisional games too, but I'd love to see the Habs, Leafs, and Sens come out west more often, and vice-versa. Speaking of which, I'm really looking forward to Hockey Day in Canada tomorrow.

The chef is beloved Calgary Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff. The picture first appeared during the Flames' amazing playoff run in 2004. Everytime Miikka backstopped the team to a hard-fought victory, the fans would call it a "Kipper Special". After they beat the heavily favored Red Wings in the 2nd round, a creative fan with a little too much time on his/her hands made this photo and started posting it on the Flames messageboard after every win, and it's become a tradition ever since. Check out calgarypuck.com after every Flames victory and you'll see that photo appear in the game thread.

I've never told anyone to stop posting in any of my messages...except once or twice to the Darkest Canuck, but that is self-explanatory.

Lion, the funny thing is I also agree with you regarding Ovechkin, he is hands down the best rookie in the league...maybe "anti-Canadian" wasn't the most accurate word to use earlier....EDIT** I retract my quasi apology, I said "anti-canadian hockey media" schtick...and I continue to stand by that.

I'm just not sure why you guys get your backs up when a sportscaster shows a little favouritism during the heat of the moment on live television...are you naive enough to think that this doesn't happen elsewhere, in EVERY SINGLE SPORT. "Biased Canadian media" as you so eloquently put it, is in fact biased sportscasting...everywhere!!

I just fail to understand it, why you and Lion beat your drum for the "broadcasting rights" of the visiting team/underdog...(Insert Peter Cetera's classic "I am the man who will fight for your honor" song) Once you guys realize that this isn't the Nightly News where UNBIASED BROADCASTING is expected maybe then you guys will let your guard down a bit, not get so worked up, and enjoy the game for what it is...entertainment, and a source of pride for many.

I did a quick search, and it doesn't look like this topic has come up yet, so here goes.

Every NHL analyst has an opinion about the current schedule structure, and none of them really seem to like it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, each team plays the following games:
-8 vs. each division rival (32 total)
-4 vs. each conference rival (40 total)
-1 vs. each team from two selected divisions in the opposite conference (10 total)

I think that it should be something like:
-6 vs. each division rival (24 total)
-4 vs. each conference rival (40 total)
-1 vs. each team from opposite conference (15 total)

I know its not 82 games, but something like that would work because it's a less ridiculous number of games vs. division rivals, plus you actually play every team in the league. It doesnt make sense to me that not every team in the league will play each other.

Anyway, that is my take. Thoughts??
