Because the league works from the idea that hockey is as popular as its going to get in Canada, and they look to the States as a market to grow the sport.

Yes, but their experiences in Nashville, Florida, Atlanta, and Phoenix over the last decade or so seem to indicate that it is a failing strategy.
Why even think about putting a team in KC, where hockey has already failed once before, and is likely to fail again, when another team in Canada would sell out every game and make bags of money?

Free Agent Day today, hopefully the Habs pick up someone good. I'm watching TSN's coverage and I find it hilarious that they rank Scott Gomez as the #1 guy available. He wasn't worth the 5 mill. he made last year and he's probably going to get more than that this year. I know he's supposed to be a good defensive player but he only had 60 points last year, there's no way he should make the same kind of money as guys like Drury and Briere. I'd like to see the Habs make a push for Briere or Zubris or Nylander althought I know I'm going to be dissapointed at the end of the day.

I really hope he signs with us, if not at least were trying for a change. Montreal should consider Ouellet as well, he's young with potential, bagged 20 goals last year and probably wont cost a whole lot. Im just wondering what they plan to do if Souray bolts, I hope they can replace him with someone more stable at the back, Ill miss his big shot though, he can really pound the puck.

For what it's worth, Scott Gomez would be #1 on my list too, ahead of both Briere & Drury.
And Mathieu Schneider is the first big fish to fall, going to the Anaheim Ducks of all places. Of course this will start the speculation that Scott Niedermayer will be retiring...otherwise could the Ducks possible afford to have in the neighborhood of $20 million tied up in 3 defensemen?
Tom Poti to Washington for $3.5 mil/per, Richard Zednik & Bret MacLean to Florida...finally some signings are trickling through.

Looks like Briere is signing with the Flyers, I knew it would be too good to be true. Maybe the Habs can sign Yashin now instead.. :x :roll: Gomez will definitely not come to Canada let alone Montreal, Drury is supposed to be going to L.A., not much left for top line centres. Every year the same shit, this team is really going nowhere, and if Souray leaves, which I think he will, were pretty much screwed for goal scoring.
