The Liz Phair vinyl reissues made me re-appreciate her earlier work. The Exile box set with the early demos of what became albums #1 and #2 are pretty neat, and Exile itself turns out to be for the most part a timeless album. She was maybe the first female musician I really got into, and it's interesting how much of an influence Liz had on future female musicians. Whipsmart, another solid pop rock album, then Whitecholatespaceegg has its moments but is a bit more scattered.

Possible a case where albums #1 and #2 came fairly organically, and then #3 was the first album with pressure on her as a writer -- plus it sounds like the label got much more involved in the song production and selection process. From reading the book that came with Exile, she never really set out to be a musician -- fine arts was her main calling -- and it sounds like she maybe was overwhelmed by the whole business side of the business. After this album she really lost the path, IMO, though her attempts at pop-rock hits with the writers for Avril Lavigne on album #4 are not quite as weak as I recall when I relisten now. Curious to hear new material from her -- she's been working with Ryan Adams for what sounds like 2 years on a new album.

I think the "rediscover" part of thread title can is merely a suggestion in this thread, because you can discover classics all the time.

So I guess case in point... This is might be my contender for '2018 Older Album of the Year'

27 years later and this album is still so freakin' good. Come to think of it, their first 3 albums are all fantastic. Not a single dud on either one.

I go as far as first four, Three Snakes is also a solid album. By Your Side and Lions have moments (but a bit too much production, especially BYS), then I think they finished strong with Warpaint and Before the Frost. Too bad the brothers, or I think mostly Chris, are so dysfunctional. With their prime time lineup including Ford on guitar and Eddie on keys they were a killer live band. Once Ford was out, then in, then out again it lost a bit of the magic but they were still such a solid live band not afraid to pull out a deep cut or a slightly obscure cover over a radio hit (sometimes to the confusion of a crowd there to hear the radio hits).

Two of my live show related highlights are Crowes. One was a live audience recording session for Before the Frost in Woodstock. Just an amazing night watching them record the album live off the floor. Other was a show at the Fillmore in San Fran -- just a cool place to see a show. The four feet tall girl beside us pulled out what looked like a 2 foot long bong from who knows where.

I like Three Snakes as well. And I agree, Warpaint and Before the Frost are both excellent. By Your Side has some good moments, particularly in the first half of the album. It sags a bit in the middle IMO, but then finishes strong with the final two tracks, Then She Said My Name and Virtue & Vice.

My only live Crowes experience was in Calgary on the Southern Harmony tour in '93. Crowes audiences were a lot like Hip audiences back then, where you had a strange mix of all kinds of people: college kids, teenagers, boomers, punk-rockers, metal heads...they were one of those rare bands that everyone could agree on. The show rocked, and I remember this massive, thick blanket of marijuana smoke hovering above the crowd. I've ever seen so much weed at one show in my life, before or since.

I think I have a new favourite Blue Rodeo album.

This is as "rock" as Blue Rodeo gets, and I've always preferred that side of the band more than the country leanings. I put this one neck-in-neck with Five Days in July for tops in their catalogue. I saw them on this tour in 1996 and Keelor was ripping off long, messy solos like he was auditioning to replace Neil Young in Crazy Horse in 1972. Girl in Green, in particular, was outstanding live. Not that it's any slouch on record.
