Music @ Work - Where's the Love?
#31

Just my two cents,

yes, the flow isn't great, PP is the opposite, where the flow is excellent.

Second, do you think this record may get some resurgence as a result of shuffle mode on the iPod? That tends to break albums up, and let each song be judged as the song rather than in some big context.

How would you sequence the record if you had the chance, or is the diversity unsequenceable?

I really appreciate all this feedback regarding Music @ Work. I'm glad to see there is actually quite a bit of Love for this album. But this still leaves me slightly confused on why the Hip continue to neglect the last 10 songs.

I understand the need to play the "hits" but the Hip are known for regularly mixing things up and it appears fans like the album. Why not throw in something from tracks 5 - 14?

I wonder if the Hip actually don't care for these tracks. I don't think it would be so unusual for a band to grow tired or just end up disliking a few of their songs.

Or perhaps they thought the songs never translated well live, although I would disagree. Maybe they would have to spend some time relearning the tunes? It has been over 6 years since many of these songs to be performed live. Or maybe one of the guys occasionally suggests the Bastard or Stay and the other members just shoot it down.

Obviously these are questions only the Hip can answers, I'm just one curious fan. Although I have yet to check out the setlist for last night's concert so there is still hope.

I enjoy the setlist on M@W for the very reason some of you don't like it - It's a roller coaster. It doesn't follow the classic formula. It's eclectic. It starts strong and ends very anticlimactically and leaves you guessing inbetween.

Let's have some fun. For those of you who think the album doesn't flow - What track order would have made the album flow better?

IMO some of the songs don't get played live from that album due to the fact that some require a bit of "set up". For example I love the Completist. Great song, but it requires the drum loop, so does Sharks and Toronto #4. Tiger requires the guitar intro loop thing... thus is a bit of a challenge too (check out the you tube version where the band really struggles to stay with it). Pines, Toronto and Completist also have a female voice, not a requirement but the band might feel that those songs lack the cd personality and are not worthy of a live performance....

Train Overnight, The Bear, Wild Mountain Honey, The Bastard, Freak Turbulance and Stay should be fair game though... Just would require the band to relearn them...

My 2 cents :thumb:

they rehearsed every song in their catalogue for the club tour a few months back. don't think there is anything they really need to relearn

Yep, good point but I have a feeling they only went through some songs a few times then haven't played them since.

I know I'm in the minority here, but this is my favorite Hip album (despite the cover, which is to me the visual equivalent of a dot.com casualty, and I guess in that sense it's poetically appropriate for the time of the album's release!).

I would axe "Freak Turbulence" from the album for starters.

But the other, more intriguing option, in hindsight, would've been to wait for the In Violet Light songs, and throw in a few b-sides, and then make the required double album for a band like the Hip, i.e. their Physical Graffiti. How? Something like this...

Disc One
  • Radio Show
    The Bastard
    The Completists
    Wild Mountain Honey
    Freak Turbulence
    Sharks
    Silver Jet
    Ultra Mundane
    All Tore Up
    Toronto #4
    Leave
    Oh Honey
    The Dire Wolf
    The Dark Canuck
Disc Two
  • The Darkest One
'It's A Good Life If You Don't Weaken'
    'Use It Up'
    Are You Ready
    Train Overnight
    The Bear
    Throwing Off Glass
    A Beautiful Thing
    My Music At Work
    Tiger The Lion
    Lake Fever
    Putting Down
    Problem Bears
    Stay
As I Wind Down The Pines

I really like that double disc idea. I thought it was interesting how you kept the closers the same but changed both openers. I would have to agree, I always thought the last songs really ended the albums nicely. The first songs were never as strong as previous albums although I can understand the Hip's choice in both cases.

Spycouple, that looks like a terrific sequence. I agree with the double album idea too. How cool for us Hip fans if the band did that......ie Clash london Calling, Zeps Graffitti, Floyds the Wall....etc...

The Horrible Esthete Wrote:M@W is a fantasic record.

Tiger, Lake, Stay, Completists, Toronto, WM Honey, Sharks, Train, Bear, Pines -- love 'em.

Incidentally, "Pines" was recorded at Kingsway on Esplanade in the French Quarter, and the sirens you hear are NOLA PD. Daniel Lanois suggested that it be left in the record, reminiscent of the airplane passing overhead that is audible in Zeppelin's "Black Country Woman", which was recorded in the cottage garden at Bron-Yr-Aur (that's what Plant is referring to during the intro when he says "Nah - leave it.")

Wow, that is really interesting. I've always felt that that siren fit in very nicely at the start of the song. I thought they put it in on purpose, I'm glad they left it in there.

I threw the Cd on my itunes and then rearranged the songs. Give it a try, you can create more 'flow' by your own arrangement.

A Hip set list is like a box of chocolates..you never know which one you're going to get.

As soon as I posted that I knew someone would ask that..lol.

Not quite a finished product yet. I like turbulence as song 5 and I am thinking of John Cage as the opener or putting it later like 8 or 9. So for now, I am all over the map but it does give it a different feel.
