I think part of it may be that its targeted to High School/University students. Maybe I'm wrong though.

I've been on for maybe 2 weeks now, and like Sean said, I have reconnected with about 6 people so far from high school and college, that i never talk to anymore. I don't plan on having long in-depth conversations with these people, or becoming there best friend again, it's just cool to see what people are up to and who is still talking to who.
It's interesting to take a peek.

The point of facebook is to be able to keep tabs on people you don't actually want to talk to. Good or bad, that's its only true function.
Anything else that comes of facebook is a "happy accident."

one thing High School/Uni students have to be aware of is future employers and colleges checking out your Facebook/MySpace/Friendster profile to see what you are up to. One of my college buddies had a good job offer withdrawn after they checked his Facebook profile and saw all the beer bong party pictures he had on there.

you can limit your profile so can only your "friends" can see it.

So my friends can see it. The only people not on my friends list are either ones that I don't know or friends I haven't added yet, in which case they can add me and see my profile. If some random guy adds me and he looks like the guy who just interviewed me, I just won't accept his add request.
And my profile has never been private anyway, it's just what I'd do if I was trying to get a job.
