Jagr probably doesn't, but maybe next year an Iginla, or St. Louis, or Heatley, or Alfredson, or whoever will have an incredible season and WILL deserve to get paid that much, because their efforts had such a direct effect on the team's success. Cferneyh's said before that winning hockey teams put fans in the seats, the fans in the seats buy things at the games, and own merchandise, and watch the games on tv, and so on and so forth... winning hockey teams are made up of players who give it 110% and go in there every game and fight as hard as they can for those 2 points, putting their bodies on the line, and pushing themselves to the limit. if one player can stand out amongst the team as a whole for having an direct effect on the team's success, then yeah, he should get a higher salary than what other players have...if you're bringing home any awards, or accepting any kind of hardware from the league, if any new banners go up in your arena, if you can turn a team that missed the playoffs a year ago into a playoff team, or a non-contender into a contender, you should probably get a raise. now, say a player has an incredible season, his best ever, he leads the charge all season to help his team remain in contention for, and secure a playoff spot, and then take the team deep into the playoffs...the team's profits go waaaaaaaaay up, from a higher attendance level, more playoff games, more people consuming food and drink, more people buying 50/50 tickets ect., more merchandise being sold, all kindsa shit, BUT under the new salary cap or w/e arrangement there ends up being...there's not much room to boost that players salary, because there's all those other players to try to keep happy as well, and as a result the owner keeps the extra $$$ that shoulda went to the player that had the standout season. how is it fair that some fat cat bastard owner would get to keep money that somebody went out and worked his ass off for night in and night out? i don't think any of you would like it if it happened to you, and don't give me the old "they're lucky to play hockey for a living blah blah blah", because pro hockey is big business, and has been for a long time, it didn't just become a multi-billion dollar world-wide industry out of the blue. just because you had childhodd fantasies of playing in the nhl for whatever your favourite team was, and they didn't come true, doesn't mean you're entitled to be bitter and envious towards the players that play the game we love. people try to label the players as greedy, and as thinking that they're bigger than the game, and that is not true (there might be some who are tha way, but that still doesn't make it right to categorize the whole lot of them along side the rotten one). the players can't be bigger than the game or vice versa..BECAUSE THE PLAYERS ARE THE GAME...and not just the nhl players, everyone who's played everywhere, we all do it for the same reason, because we love to play, BUT seeing as it's some people's job to play, they wanted to be paid fairly. i will say this: there is no league that is bigger than the game, and if the union stands its ground, there is no way the league will win a battle in which their gameplan is to stop the greatest collective of hockey players in the world today from competing, because the truth is, people still want to watch hockey, just not today's NHL, which is a shame, because of the league's rich history, and tradition of great hockey. and if people have to, eventually they'll start turning to other sources for their hockey fix, it's already happening with the rise in popularity of the CHL, and the Elite Leagues in Europe. I'm not saying the Swedish Elite League will take over everything, or anything silly like that, BUT, eventually something will catch on, it's only a matter of time. the only people who really have a lot to those are the players close to retirement, who'll lose the chance to compete again, but if they've made it this far, chances are they've had a pretty good career. they won't be forgotten by the fans that've idolized them for so long, or by the league in which they played their careers in.

I've never suffered the former, but last night, and this morning I was really suffering from the latter. That pain is right up there with kidney stone removal surgery!

Speaking of which, I hate kidney stones, and their associated pains.

Materialistic Yuppies with BMW's and lofts down town. Also Ultra-Cool Hipsters that shop in thrift stores, brag that they don't watch tv (but then sneek to their parents house in the burbs and watch the friends series finale), read kerouac (total hack beat author) and still listen to records because the music is so "pure" that way.

I agree with everything except the Kerouac part. I've been a fan of his work since I was in grade 12. On the Road and Dharma Bums are two of my favorite books.

Ah yes, I completely agree with you here Chris. I too am a sufferer of these horrible little nasty stones. UGH. Fortunately I don't get them as much as I used to due to my overload of water consumption.

KNOW WHAT I HATE- PEOPLE THAT CAN"T FORM PARAGRAPHS- my eyes got way to strainded trying to read that drivel.
I realize that the better players deserve to get paid more no one is arguing that all players should make the same money. But it has to be in line with league revenues, the way it is now its way out of whack.
The NHL is a business, if you think it is being played for the love of the game you are fooling yourself.
Owners have the right to make a profit, Players get paid as the owners see fit. That is what it was when they made the big bucks, but now that has changed ane the revenues don't warrent the salaries. Everyone knows the players are not going to starve if the large salaries are cut back a bit. so the average salary goes from 1.7 to 1.3 so what, 99% of us would be happy with that. Oh yeah and don't forget, its just a game they are playing! They are employees of a business. YOu take what you are worth or leave.

Look at the CFL that is the league the NHL should be comparing itself to, not the NFL NBA or MLBA. Salaries in line with revenues.

I used to dig him until my grand father told me what a hack he was. He used to do Kerouac's ex-wive's taxes. He wrote on the road while her father floated the two of them money for their apartment, food etc. Sorta a betrayal of the values his literature allegedly celebrates. That said, the dude could write.

I didn't even bother to read the giant run-on sentence to which you refer. And, I must say, I agree whole-heartedly with your argument.

I will join in the lament over kidney stones. I suffered my first (and most painful) stone in 1991, and my ninth about a year ago. I must say that my pain threshold is rather high, and that has allowed me to skip the hospital (emergency) altogether for several of these stones; that is risky practice and is not advised, since a stone that obstructs the flow of urine to the bladder can cause serious damage to your kidney (in which case surgery or ultrasonic treatment is required). But time after time I would go in to the hospital and shell out big $$$ for blood tests, CAT scans, and even 'overnight observations' while all that was done as far as 'treatment' was concerned was to sit around and wait for it to 'pass'.

Now, when I get a stone, I just ride it out at home - unless the pain gets to beso debilitating I must break down and seek relief in the form of PERCOCET (paradise in pill-form).....

1. NHL games are played because there is money to be made, that's been the sole purpose of the league since the "original 6" era, but on the other side of it, none of the players in the NHL started (and kept on) playing hockey because they wanted to make a lot of money, they play because it's their passion...just because it also happens to be their job doesn't mean they shouldn't try to make as much $ as possible, that's what you're supposed to do in a capitalist society right? everybody wants to be paid as much as possible for the job they do, you're a liar if you say otherwise.

2. the players have the right to not accept a deal they don't like and hold out for a better one.

3. of course 99.% of us would be happy with that, because we aren't worth that much, it's different when you ARE worth that much and people won't acknowledge or accept it, then i imagine it'd be frustrating.

4. if you have that low of an opinion of the NHL, that you'd compare it to the CFL, i'd suggest that you probably aren't a true fan of the league, or the game of hockey itself, and i probably won't bother allowing myself to be concerned with your opinion on the matter from here on in.

1. Yes, hockey players in the past didn't make much money. Today, it's a different story. Why do you think kids dream of playing in the NHL?? For love of the game? No, because they want to be rich. It's a fact. I'm not saying it's a bad dream to have, but the dream is to be rich plain and simple. If NHL players made 200,000 a year there would be a lot less kids saying they "dream of being in the NHL".

2. The players have every right to not accept a deal. Only problem is, 75 percent of the hockey watching public are against the players.

3. So how do you know how much a player is worth to fans???? Personally, I'm not even affected by the lockout because I don't miss watching hockey. It's not that big of a deal. Speak for yourself about the "players' worth". Iginla is a great player but he's worth nothing to me. Without him, my life isn't any worse off. I agree the top players should make decent salaries but who exactly can determine what they are worth? The only logical way for me would be to connect that to revenues. How can you say a player is worth X amount of dollars if it isn't in correlation to the revenues? So if a team makes 30 million, does it make sense that one player should get 10 million? Maybe it does because I don't understand the mindset of some fans who would spend their whole paycheck watching a bunch of goons skate up and down the ice. I try to spend my money on more important things, and try to stay away from "idol worship".

4. The least you can say is that CFL players play for the love of the game because they make peanuts for money. I think the point was that salaries are directly proportional to revenues which only makes sense. NHL players know it makes sense too but they are letting their greed and egos get in the way of doing something reasonable about the issue. They think they can fool the fans. Sorry, but the average person is smart enough to see what the players are doing and that's why hardly anyone is backing the players in the court of public opinion.
