this was a called press conference...knowing full well that every sports channel would be carrying it, and I think it was his way of saying "i belong in the hall of fame"...Linden doesn't get press coverage anywhere but Vancouver, and when he goes to an organization called "Canuck Place", as a Canuck, the news reports on it every so often...Linden doesn't call press conferences to announce how generous he is..

I got a kick out of the 'nucks first PPV game this year when they mentioned that in the first intermission that they would be showing a new feature called "A Day in the Life" where they follow a Canuck around for the day. I turned to my wife and said: First of all, I guarantee it will be Linden. Second of all, I guarantee it will show him signing autographs for little kids and/or doing charity work. Sure enough, both predictions were bang on.

Opiated, you can accept his motivations as being pure (which I don't), but you cannot seriously think for one second that the guy isn't a media whore. Never has a 15 point player generated near the coverage that Linden got in the offseason when he was without a contract.

Pro hockey can be a ruthless and dirty business...anyone who's played knows that. Eric's never said much about his side of the story.

I laugh when people say he has no character. We're talking about a guy who risked his health to come back and play the game he loves in pursuit of the ultimate prize. A guy who stood up to anyone for his teammates, who played for his country every chance he could, who honoured his word and the contracts he signed. A guy who has done incredible work with children's charities across North America. The bad teammate or bad leader thing is a joke too...talk to former teammates of his and see what they have to say. Read some of the articles from the past couple of days.
I talked to an old coach of his recently who said he was by far the hardest working player in practice and off the ice he's ever seen.
Eric's nothing but character.

Could be the most complete player of all time. The fact that injuries cut his career short can't deny that. Even Bob Clarke thinks so. He was a freight train on skates with hands of gold and a canon of a shot.

But still, charity is charity. If it brings a smile to the face of the kids, whether they are sick, or in need, or not, I'm all for it. Kids look up to hockey players in Canada. I don't care if he brings cameras with him, cause the kids seem to love it. Hell, they're probably even more excited that not only is there a hockey player visiting them, but they also have a chance to be on TV!

Uh, nobody's arguing that. Of course kids love it. What I'm asking opiated is exactly what the difference is between Lindros' charitable actions and those of Linden's. Opiated ALWAYS uses it as an example as to why Linden is a "good guy", whereas when it comes to Lindros he claims it "was another way of him saying "look how fucking great i am"..."

I don't mean to pile on, but I have to agree with alex and cfern. That kind of opinion is cold, dude. Like, real cold.

Dislike the guy if you want, but to call into question his motives like that, especially when he didn't brag about it in his press conference... I'm sorry, I'm just not cool with that.

I guess in this case your serious hate-on for Lindros clouds your judgement in whatever other good things he's done such as this donation. A shame, imho.

They're questioning his intentions, not his actions. I think everyone here approves of Lindros giving as much money to charity as he wants, regardless of what his intentions are. Obviously we have good reasons for thinking that Lindros is simply a media whore. Seems to me that many charitable donations are done in one's own self-interest...the only thing I get out of donating to UNICEF is a smug sense of self-assurance. Lindros is just doing this on a larger scale. So which is "colder", us questioning his intentions or his actual intentions?

Well, people are never going to stop guessing and perceiving those intentions. If those people who think Lindros is a media whore (and has not-so-good intentions) have some sort of precedent for thinking this, then they have all the information that is needed to answer this question for themselves.

On a side note, I have invented a machine that scientifically proves that other people have thoughts that are the same as my own.

I don't get the whole media whore thing you're talking about...he's never been one to say much to the press at all. he chose to take the high road when the flyers wanted to sling mud. his charity work has been largely under the radar. not much basis for that label at all.
