As for Pearl Jam and Radiohead, of course I could see them doing something like this. They would do it in a heartbeat. It's a concert, man. How is this just a cash grab? What do you think that their big Canadian arena shows are for? You don't think they get paid for them? They make money from every concert they do (aside from charity shows of course). The Hip aren't working for free ya know. :rambo:

no need to get so wound up. i just think it's a lame gig. this is an opinion forum and we're allowed to express all of our opinions.
Whether it's hedge fund conferences or playing to a bunch of Molson drinking Canadian ex-pats who miss the comforts of home, it just seems like a silly gig to me. plus, with $100 VIP tickets, it just all sounds a bit too corporate for me. (this strikes me as a gig where the "go leafs go" chant would start.... another huge pet peeve of mine at Hip shows).

i say it out of pure love for the band, man. the arena shows were an honest experience of a band playing a show to meet demand of the market. if they took on a corperate sonsor like The Rolling Stones often do, I would also give them a hard time.

the Grand Cayman is beautiful, I was there about 3, maybe 4 years ago.....7 mile beach is amazing, it's worth the trip anyway, and throw in TTH, it's a must if you can make it......

Right on, brother. No big deal. I'm thinking of how great it would be to go down there for a vacation topped off by seeing The Hip. It's such a weird thing for them to be playing there and I love the idea.

Playing places like the Pengrowth Saddledome and Air Canada Centre and Verizon Wireless Theater is so much less corporate than a one-off outdoor gig in the Cayman Islands?
There's no escaping the corporate influence on rock, but I see this show exactly as sadies said - "the shows were an honest experience of a band playing a show to meet demand of the market."
This show is happening because the market demands it, that's all.
The only difference between the "Molson drinking Canadian ex-pats" you talk about and the fans at any other hip show is the "ex-pat" part.
And maybe the Molson part, since it can be hard to find down here... but we'll substitute with a Red Stripe and raise a toast to you since you can't be at the show.

I guess I better play my Megamillions so I can have enough loot to fly down and stay in the islands for a while. The concert is less than a month before my wedding so maybe I can convince the future Mrs. that we should break tradition and have a PRE-wedding honeymoon. 8)
Alas, the apartment in the Dominican is paid for and the Presidente is on ice after the wedding...so it looks like I'll be chilling in a bar owned by Canadian Ex-Pats in the DR listening to a hip album instead of watching them live.

I'm living here... Flights are costly from Canada - probably around $1000. If you can fly out of Detroit or another border town it's much cheaper. Hotel can be expensive but there are cheaper hotels than the Ritz. You can probably find something in the $200 range per night... I can give you some connections if you'd like.
