Once one of Canada's most promising rock acts, Reunion Tour marks the third time The Weakerthans have regurgitated the template of their debut. Worse, the albums have progressively gotten more and more timid. The best tracks are all retreads of songs from Reconstruction Site, while the worst — and here I have to single out the inclusion of the cringe-inducing spoken-word track "Elegy For Gump Worsley" — will have you wondering why you aren't just playing Left & Leaving instead. The worst part is that I can't even definitively slam Reunion Tour. It's not like John K. Samson lost the ability to write hooks and lyrics that'll be stuck in your head for the next four years. This record is retardedly catchy. It's also patronizingly lazy. It's becoming increasingly obvious why the band take four years to cobble together their albums. They're completely bankrupt of new ideas. Not that any of what's written here matters because, as usual, all of their followers will buy it unquestioningly. C'est la vie.

So was I the only one who raced to HMV after work only to discover that their shipment was late and they didn't get the new album? Man, what a letdown. At least I was able to buy the new Foo Fighters, Steve Earle, and Pearl Jam to cheer myself up. There must be at least one store that has it. I'm gonna have to drive around tomorrow and do a little hunting.

Man that sucks. I got mine at HMV in Toronto (in First Canadian Place)...they only had about 4 copies left on the shelf when I got there just before 6pm. I wonder if that was from stellar sales, or they just didn't have many copies to begin with.

I've been switching back and forth between Reunion Tour and the Foo Fighters' record for most of the night, and on first impression I'm a big fan of both. John K. Samson does a great job of storytelling in his songs, though that's not exactly breaking news. There's not a song I don't like on the album, and in particular I'm really impressed by the reworked version of Utilities that closes the album.

I'll never understand the music media's obsession with artists having to completely reinvent themselves with each and every offering to maintain some sort of imaginary credibility. I'll agree that Reunion Tour does sound similar to their previous work, but I love their previous work, so what's the problem?!?

Speaking of which, I was finally able to pick up the album today. I ended up finding it downtown at indie record store Megatunes, which is probably where I should've gone in the first place. I've been spinning it all day and I'm absolutely loving it. Great album!

So I've had a couple days now to absorb the new album and I'm really enjoying it. 4 years was a long time to wait, and it's great to finally hear some new material from these guys. Civil Twilight, Relative Surplus Value, Sun in an Empty Room, and Night Windows are my early favourites, but the rest of the disc is excellent as well. I love this band!

The Weakerthans are booked for two nights at the Phoenix on Wednesday Nov. 7 and Thursday Nov. 8 at 9:15 p.m. $25 in advance @ ticketmaster.

Anybody seeing the boys on tour this month? I've got tickets for their Macewan Hall show at the U of C next Tuesday. Should be a great show!
