This was one of the best shows I've seen of the Hip since maybe the LA show on the last tour. Gordie was in his usual talkative state; yelling at the microphone/microphone attacking him back, painting the audience and as much as I'd like to get it out of my head....the strip tease dance he has added is well...just scary hock: :lol: . The band sounded fantastic (as always) and they turned in a really special performance of Scared (I loved the sound of Paul's guitar on that one).

Now if I could only find a job where I could have weekdays off...then perhaps I'd be able to see the rest of the west coast leg.

This concert was very special to me in many ways, was there with my 2 brothers and sister-in-law, meet Mark, Tony, Adrian and Nick from the base and caught Gord's towel, it was well soaked in sweat, but still fun.

One of the fondest memories of the concert for me is going to be the after the concert round of O Canada outside the HOB in Mandalay Bay, us hundreds of Canadians sang our anthem about 4 times before the HOB and Casino security broke it up, it was a very calm crowd, just disterbing the gamblers, very cool anyway.

Six of us headed down from Southern Ontario for 5 days in Vegas with the HIP concert being the main reason. Had a great dinner in the HOB with a great waitress, but thats where the praise of HOB ends.
We all had to check our cameras in for 2 bucks, then had to reclaim them with the girls standing in line for 30 minutes.
We got searched and wanded by the makebelieve CIS guys. Got up to our seats which i purchased on line within 60 seconds of them going up for sale months ago. Had talked to Albert at the HOB on three sucessive nights before they went on sale asking about where to sit. Just like others that bought at the same time we choose tickets on Bobby's side in the balcony.
Booze was about a buck more than the resturant, Sadies came out and did a great job, maybe a little nervous cause I heard they weren't appriciated in Denver. I though they were in Vegas. Could not see Bobby's blue boots so I knew we had to move. One of our other couples we bought two tickets a month after the 4 of us had better seats where they could see the whole stage. So as the Sadies were finishing a whole bunch and I mean a lot of people moved over to the middle section.
Everybody was in the same boat, thought they had great seats then watched empty ones just sitting there. Sat beside a couple from Nova Scotia on one side and 2 couples from Vancouver on the other. You tell me other than the Grey Cup what brings Canadians together like the HIP.
SHOW WAS FANTASTIC, almost sureal for us.
One of the highlights of my life, but the whole Vegas vacations was as well.
Songs off, Gordie mixing up words, Robby smiling, Johnny pounding his heart out, Gord grooving, Paul keeping Gordie in step thats why we go to live concerts.
I had blogged before that I thought it would be an Elvis song and it was, how could the HIP do anything else but Elvis, they were in his town and the HIP appriciate music history like no other band, they know the meaning of who came before,not like these pop acts of today, but that is one of the reasons we follow them, they are humble.
The songs were awesome, with Flamenco for my brother in law, just to bad Kate Fenner wasn't there, I was hoping for Escape but not this night, Bobcaygeon for the girls cause we have gone there for years in the summer and is always special.
As the girls lined up, all of us guys started singing O'Canada, it took 3 tries to really rock but we did it, Then the CIS guys with their flashlights moved in, but talking to them this ( the large crowd ) happens all the time but I'm sure not the singing. Anyways the night was great the concert was FANTASTC and the trip was well worth it.
I had the Hamilton New years HIP shirt on and my wife had the last Edgefest in Barrie T shirt on,

Why do people continue to think this is a great way and place to show national pride. You don't hear people singing God Save the Queen at a Stones concert or God Bless America at a Pearl Jam concert.

I'm not even American and I get annoyed when I read stories like these...this coming from a guy with a red Maple Leaf tatooed on him.

Was it not a tradition many years ago to sing the Canadian National Anthem at all HIP concerts. To put down a group of people who decide to show their pride in their country on foreign soil tells me a little about your self. The bands you use as an example were pretty weak, the Stones are a made in England American band and Pearl Jam, is that the best you can do. So, do I believe that a group of Irish rockers who traveled to America with U2, broke out in the Irish National Anthem after the concert , Gee I hope so. I think the national anthems are always played before sporting events, concerts and all types of events world wide, but maybe you don't get out much. Our national anthem was far better than the Go Leafs Go that a couple of people also tried, as well as the ARGOOOOOOOS chant also heard.

No. This was not a tradition. It happened a few times. And it was annoying, but at least it was done in Canada.

To put down a group of people who decide to show their pride in their country on foreign soil tells me a little about your self.

But not enough that you should pass judgement.

Where did you learn that being an antagonistic ass is the way to ingratiate yourself to new people?

My wife (american) and I (cdn) went to LV, Anaheim and LA shows this past week and I am a proud Canadian but thought it was a little much with the singing and flag waving.
My wife wondered why we never heard Star Spangled Banner any other concerts we have been to, We have been to four U2 shows and never heard any Irish chanting.
It must be frustrating to the Hip as well, they are trying to break down here and it just ends up a bunch of Canadians go to the shows

Also Gord had a bunch of chances to grab any one of the numerous canadian flags that were thrown on the stage or grab one of the big-ass flags that were blocking peoples sights (sigh) and start waving it around and he choose not to. I think there is a reason for this.....

It's just a little much to be singing and waving flags IMO. Just enjoy the show and be respectful of the country that you are in. Not that singing the cdn anthem is not being respectful, just in general.

i could not agree more. I find stories like this so cringe worthy.

though, everybody gets something different out of this band, i suppose. for some people, they are huge music fans and that's why they love the band. For others, they are moderate music fans, but proud patriots for their home-grown talent.... The Hip attract an interesting crowd that way. Both are absolutely fine, but the anthem singing still make me a cringe a bit (sorry folks).

i miss kate as well on flamenco, she was so good at that back in 2000...and i was also hoping for escape, penguin or 38 years old...still a great night, thx for sharing your story!

O' Canada was sung in Anaheim about 10 minutes before they took the stage, mostly people on the floor, who then gave themselves a nice applause afterword.

I'm not 100% sure if it happened in LA, but I know it was filmed so we can check the tape down the road. But I do know for sure there were plenty of huge Canadian flags on the floor, which of course were raised every few minutes and blocked the view of everyone behind them. I’m 6’0” so it doesn’t bother me, but the girls we were with didn’t appreciate it.

The LA show was great, sold out venue, the sound was perfect, the entire crowd sung along to nearly every song and was pumping their fists every time the lights hit the crowd, it was great. But I wonder if there were any industry types or radio people in the crowd who looked around at the setting and were impressed by the band and the responsiveness of the crowd, but then just chalked it up to 1000+ Canadians coming down from the cold to enjoy the LA Spring and the Hip, and there is not a true fan base in LA they could market to...???

Funny you should mention this as something similar happened in Houston, someone had a big sign that read "Hello from Kingston" and kept waving it around, Gord grabbed it during Grace, Too. He kind of mokingly paraded it around for a second then tore it to peices and tossed it aside.

I think one of the main reasons Canadians do this is cause the Hip are CANADAIN, they have never tried to hide this in the US and if they wanted to sell out alla Nickleback, they would have done so along time ago. But they continue to sing about hockey and Canadian things. I have been a fan for along time and think it was great to have a show with 99% Canadians showing there National pride. Who was Gord kidding "thank you las Vegas". But blocking peoples view of the shows with flags, signs I agree, that is not respectful. I for one am not embarrased by the fact I am from Canada. It is funny to hear Americans say we are too patriotic, never seen an American wave a flag???
