Albums you've recently rediscovered

Is This Live -- written by Christopher Ward. It has some interesting things about the early days of MuchMusic, VJs, band interviews and then memories from the bands about being on Much and making videos. I'd forgot how it really brought a lot of new music to me as a teen. There's a few small sections on The Hip.

I'm going to check that out as well. MuchMusic was the biggest source of new music for me in my teens. I watched a lot of Much, and if there was a commercial break on another channel I was watching I'd automatically flip over to Much to see what video was on.

The Replacements have been monopolizing my music listening time as of late. This band wasn't on my radar in their 80's heyday, a time period when my young brain preferred music played by dudes wearing lipstick, spandex and lots of hairspray. I came to the band through Paul Westerberg's two great solo contributions to the 1991 Singles soundtrack (greatest soundtrack ever?), "Dyslexic Heart" and "Waiting for Somebody". These songs hold their own on that album alongside some of the best tunes that the likes of Alice-in-Chains, Screaming Trees, and Pearl Jam have ever offered up. It was after hearing Westerberg that I checked out The Replacements, the year the band broke up. I don't have a definitive favourite album, but instead a favourite threesome, their third, fourth and fifth albums Let it Be, Tim, and Pleased to Meet Me. These are the ones that I've been listening to lately.

Funny you should mention this. I just went through a big Replacements kick as well recently after reading their excellent biography, "Trouble Boys". I think I heard their name thrown around a few times during the mid to late 80s, and I remember seeing a couple of their videos on Muchmusic. But much like you I didn't fully discover them until hearing Westerberg's songs on the Singles soundtrack. From there I discovered Let it Be, and that was it. I was an instant fan by that point and quickly gobbled up Tim, Please to Meet Me, and Hootenanny.

Westerberg's solo career has been much more hit & miss, but I think my favorite solo record of his is Stereo/Mono, which is pretty damn flawless in my opinion, and easily stands up to those Replacements albums.

As for rediscovered albums, this week I've been getting reacquainted with Crash Vegas. They recently re-issued their debut album Red Earth on vinyl and reunited for a couple of shows in Toronto, which inspired me to dust off my old CD copy and give it a few spins. Such a great album. I really need to get my hands on that vinyl.

This album almost never gets mentioned when people discuss U2. An underrated gem.

Midnight Oil - Blue Sky Mining

We have tickets to see Midnight Oil at the Budweiser Stage in a few weeks so I pulled this album out and forgot how good it was. Been playing it ever since.

Direwolf: October is a gem......also Boy. We have tickets for U2 in Buffalo as well so I will be playing the full catalogue soon. No doubt discovering old favourites!

Saw the Oils here in Vancouver back in June, and it was like they never left. Incredible show. They're also giving Pearl Jam a run for their money in regards to setlist variety.
