Man Machine Poem (the album)

NegPhil Wrote:If an album can have a center to which the individuals songs adhere to then I'm going to go with mellow.

Mellow: pleasantly rich, full, or soft : not harsh, bright, or irritating
: having a pleasing rich flavor that develops over time
: very calm and relaxed.

A little wistful, perhaps.

honestly, I would say MMP has the most depressing lyrics of any hip album ever.

I'm currently living in Taiwan, I've been checking my mailbox every 15 minutes like a lunatic. I just logged onto maplemusic and discovered that they processed my April 10th order on June 22nd!!!! How is that possible?!?! Grrrr..... :nooooo :rambo: Probably won't have the album until July!

Hot Mic is obviously about Trump. Someone must have pointed this out already.

I like the "Hey!" shout at 1:57 and 2:03 of Hot Mic. I feel like it's going to be a punch-the-air concert moment for me, and it won't bother me a bit if I'm the only one.

Each time I listen to "In a World" and Gord sings "Everything is..." in the second verse I expect him to say "...bleak" instead of "...clear".

Anyone pick-up on what Gord says at 3:27 of "In a World". He says a word ("sure"?) and the follows it up with what sounds like "Huh" before starting into "Girl I was so afraid". Those that have listened on a good set of headphones may have picked up on it.

I thought the same on my first listen and chuckled reading "Dawn, the tyrant" when I scanned the lyrics on hip.com

Hot Mic is great. I want it to go on longer though after the guitar part toward the end when Gord starts ad-libbing.

There are a few moments on the album that I feel should have been extended, but for some reason are cut short; there is a lot of "restraint" on the album, which is good to a certain degree, but when every song is like that it gets tedious. The crescendo of World Possessed, around the 3:00 minute mark, is begging to be extended for another chord progression or two, but it gets cut off and the last 30 seconds or so are quiet, and laid back, like the beginning, which is too bad. There is so much energy in the song at that point and I feel as though they cut it off too early. Machine is the same for me; both are excellent songs with great momentum, but the climax is too short.

I feel the same, but I really hate to complain about this album. Sometimes when I'm listening, I feel like the album is being 'polite' with some early song endings. But having said that, I absolutely LOVE the weirdness in a lot of the arrangements. Some tracks feel like the music and vocals are two different songs. I can't even decide on a least favorite track. I hate dragged-out endings, and in fact feel the album has too many of them. 'Man' is especially egregious in this respect - it's maybe a minute too long.

But I know what you mean about this record being judicious in the way it deals out its climaxes. I enjoy that tastefulness myself, with the band movingly confidently between dynamics within each song, but certainly if you're looking for the explosive catharsis of 'Blow at High Dough,' there's no question this record doesn't give it.

Yeah, even pre-diagnoses something crappy seemed to be going on -- or at least that's what I get from most of these songs.

Gord's dad died last fall.. if he was sick before passing, it'd probably fit the timeline.

I've moved on from the "listening to the songs as songs" phase and beginning to hear them as pieces of a live show. Or tried to, at least. "Man" into "Grace" would kill as a 1/2 shot. I'm sure "IAWPBTHM" will be used as an opener. Ultimately I really hope they give this album its due live and that the tour doesn't turn into a greatest hits tour...although I fear it will, especially towards the end. "What Blue" and "Great Soul" live for all the wins.

I was listening to Great Soul and thinking (obviously) that Chagrin Falls would follow nicely after it. Some sort of Man/Machine combo, obviously, would work well together, maybe with Grace, Too sandwiched in between?

Didn't he get a divorce too?
