However, based on that precedent Bertuzzi should have been kicked out of the league, but as everyone knows "stars" like him would never be kicked out of the league. Simon is not a star in any sence and I think that the NHL might kick him out of the league to make it look like they're tough on these types of incidents.
I know this theory is pretty extreme but I've always been a believer in the idea that a player should be suspended for however many games the person he injures misses as a result of an intentionally dirty act, unless the player doesn't miss alot of games but the act in question warrants a suspension for a longer period of time. If someone completes a dirty knee to knee hit intentionally and knocks a player out for the rest of the season, suspend that player for the rest of the season.
Simon's act was far more malicious than Bertuzzi's. 99 times out 100 Steve Moore DOESN'T break his neck from a punch WITH A GLOVE ON from a player. Hollwig is lucky he didn't break his jaw, lose all his teeth, and need radical surgery to fix a deformed face.
I don't agree with the idea of suspending a player for as long as his victim is out. The only logical solution to take care of suspensions is to weaken the NHLPA's power and for Campbell to actually give out suspensions that aren't slaps on the wrist. Emery should have been out at least 15 games, Jansenn should have got at least 10 games, Simon, with his history, should never lace up his skates in the NHL again. The NHLPA represents the guilty player but also represents the victim. However, I'm pretty sure the NHLPA would fight the NHL to the death if they thought a player was suspened too harshly. For instance, if Emery was given a 20 game suspension (which would have been warranted) I'm sure the NHLPA would have been up in arms and would put tons of pressure on the NHL to reduce the length of suspension.
Peope get all worked up over Nichol when he punched Spacek earlier this season. Nichol should have gotten about 3 games for that. A punch is 1000000X less dangerous than a stick(aka weapon). It's these stick infractions, along with hitting from behind, that the NHL needs to come down on hard.
