Once again the NHL makes an ass of themself. Somehow the same rules don't apply to Gretzky as the rest of the coaches in the NHL. Of course, I knew that would happen.
"Part of the new NHL rules call for an automatic $10,000 fine to the head coach and a one-game suspension to the player who gets an instigator fighting penalty in the last five minutes of a game, a rule the competition committee put in to discourage late-game brawls.
But NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell, who pushed for the new rule, also reserves the right to determine whether the rule applies on a case-by-case basis."
In this case, it's Gretzky so the rule doesn't apply. Why have the rule if it is based on judgement calls???? Yet another way to punish enforcers I guess. Who the hell cares that Doan isn't a goon? The fact is, he was on the ice at the end of the game and suckered an opposing player.
Gauthier, who earlier had taken down Ducks centre Todd Marchant with a high hit, crushed Lupul early in the third period with a questionable hit but did not get a penalty for it.
Fedoruk later retaliated, leaving his feet to hit Nedved. He got a match penalty for intent to injure.
''It was something that had to be addressed,'' Fedoruk told reporters after the game. ''There was a guy out there with a visor on running around like he's King Kong (Gauthier). He's not going to back it up. If the refs aren't going to call stuff like that, it falls on the players. You can only take so much, watching your teammates get late hits, high hits.
''In my eyes, it's an eye for an eye. I don't ever want to see anybody get hurt, but when my players get hurt, I feel obliged to send a message that I'm not going to let this happen. I think Nedved can thank his teammate for what happened.''
Gretzky was fuming at Fedoruk's hit on Nedved.
''The guy jumped eight feet in the air,'' said Gretzky. ''But we'll leave that to the National Hockey League to rectify.''
So what you have is Gauthier (who has a rep as a dirty player in the same mold as Marchment) running around taking cheap shots. Fedoruk DOES HIS JOB and takes a run at a Coyote's player and he is the villain??? If the refs aren't calling that pussy Gauthier's hits, what are the Ducks supposed to do, sit there with their thumbs up their asses???? If the referees don't do their job, the players have to settle it. It's as simple as that.
It's awfully nice that Gretzky was fuming. I'm sure he thought nothing of pussy Gauthier running around taking cheapshots.

Something I've been wondering for quite a while now. Why are there so many more strong teams in the NHL than in the past? Much stronger. In the Eastern Conference, there are 10 teams with a winning record, and only 5 that have a losing record, with 2 or 3 of those teams just barely under .500
I don't get it. I know there's plenty more offence, but these teams have only mainly played within their own conference. To repeat myself, I just can't understand why all of these teams have good, if not exceptionally good, records. I mean, not everyone is playing Florida every night. I suppose the point for a loss in overtime helps, and there's always a guaranteed winner in overtime. Maybe that's the key?

Just when you thought Sean Avery couldn't embarrass himself any further,......

Kind of ironic that Avery is accusing Kariya of diving when AVERY HIMSELF IS THE ONLY PLAYER TO BE DISCIPLINED FOR DIVING THIS SEASON. Sean Avery calling another player "an embarrassment to the league" is funny stuff. Avery is an embarrassment to hockey, to his family, to mankind. Avery is turning into Matt Cooke more and more every day. He always sucked and couldn't play a lick but at least he backed up his actions. Now, he doesn't even do that. It's funny too that Luc Robitaille had something to say. It's not like Avery threw a dirty hit on Kariya or anything.....(sarcasm)

If you've read anything about Barnaby it is clear that his own teammates don't even like him - hence why he's been bounced around more than Pam Anderson since the '99 season. I remember reading an interview with Rob Ray when Buffalo finally got rid of Barnaby where Ray said that Barnaby had become unbearable and his own teammates wanted to pound on him more than the opposition did. Yeah, that's a guy I'd want on my team.[/quote]
not the case...I have friends who've played with him and I have never heard anything negative about him...strictly the opposite. He sticks up for anyone wearing the same jersey as him. I remember him dropping them with Peter Worrell 2 years back and holding his own...it was unbelievable how much size he gave up in that one
the funny thing is, he can fight all these guys and sometimes look like he gets destroyed, yet he never seems to have a mark on him. Regardless, he's a warrior.
