Nation, as used in this legislation, should be defined. "Nation" as used in political science, does not mean the same thing as "state." However, in everyday language, the two are used interchangeably. A nation is really a group of people with a common identity, and it often includes a common ancestry, though this isn't always the case. Which of the two, or some other definition, is used in this act, I just don't know. I'm sure it's intentionally ambiguous.

Of course it's intentionally ambiguous. That's why it's a joke. When a bill is passed to get support from a province for a future political election, it's nothing more than bribery. That's the problem with the bill. Nobody will say what it means that Quebec is now a nation within a nation. That's why I think it's yet another example of what a joke politics and the gov't (right wing, left wing, and everyone in between) are. There's no need for this bill to be even brought up. It was passed to make Quebec happy but it's only a symbolic bill. How does it affect Quebec other than the citizens feeling happy because now they have their own nation?

Each province has its own heritage. The only difference with Québec is that almost half of them don't like being part of Canada.

Which makes them damn near equal to Alberta!

Think of a big ol' farm family with twelve kids. Quebec is one of the older children, much like the prodigal son. His nose gets out of joint the moment the father's attention shifts elsewhere. It's like Quebec is off in the corner sulking... "Hey, I'm special too... look at me, dad! Look at me!"

Now don't get me wrong: I am not suggesting that Quebec isn't unique when viewed within the framework of Canada. However, as many others have pointed out, there is something unique within every province in this country. Pretty soon every province will be a nation, and Quebec's nose will again be out of joint. Then what? The Tribe of Quebec? <shakes head>

I am from Quebec, but I have lived in Alberta for over 10 years (I am French Canadian though). In my opinion, Quebec is definitely distinct from the rest of Canada...then again, so is Newfoundland, and so is Alberta....the title of Nation is just that....a title!! I never cared about Quebec getting a seperate title then the rest...it's a question of "Let the Baby have its Bottle..."

Hi. Newbie member here... Not a hardcore seperatist, but I certainly qualify as Quebecois. I'm unsure what to read in the resolution, but I think if Scotland can have its own seperatist aspirations, and if Canada is different enough from the US to be a different nation, then it isn't hard to conceive that Quebec would have the same aspirations, is it? (especially since the differences and debates are what? a few hundred years old?) What's important is respect, good economic ties for prosperity. Change can cause worries, but in the end, what's better: a few more hundred years of wasted energy or a change in representation? The EU works great - why can't we have the Canadian Union? 2 Nations, sharing everything while having their own government...

There are probably Quebeckers out there who are separatists for different reasons, I can only speak for myself. IF (BOLDED) I ever vote for it, it won't be because I dislike the rest of Canada, it won't be because I want better treatement and it certainly won't be so that we can build walls around Quebec. (but i'll admit sometimes i'm bothered by the "anglos know best and francos should just let it go" attitude) I do think the discussion and decision is for quebeckers to make.

But hey - still a Hip fan if that's all right!

I'm from Quebec, and even I'm tired of the "Rest of Canada is against us" attitude that some people living in Quebec have. You guys have a lot of support in the country, but you choose to ignore it.

EDIT: I do see your point though - I personnaly don't think the ROC is against us, but some people might. I think part of the explanation is in history. ROC isn't against us now, but that wasn't always the case. There were... wars after all.

the French are fucking lucky that we didn't kill them all or send them back to France, and even though nobody wants to admit it, that's the basic truth of it, we didn't make them stay in Canada, they chose to...they lost the war, we won, and the fact that there's still some people whining and complaining about it is fucking ridiculous! ya, French people have their own country, and it's called France...we already made it a bilingual nation...if that's not good enough for them, then they really should go back to France...

Which brings us neatly to the point at which I suggest that I'd rather live in Canada and be laughed at, as tiger suggests, for how we deal with separatist ambitions, than live in Bosnia and have the top of my kid's head cut neatly off by a shell splinter while he's building a snowman.

But of course, you might prefer to live somewhere less laughable.
