In 1995 we opened for Page and Plant on 30 US dates. The first night of the tour we were summoned to their dressing room where they told us they really liked our music and were happy to have us on the tour. Every day Robert Plant would come back to the dressing room, chat, have a beer or jam. He was very open and friendly. On the last night of the tour at Madison Square Gardens we summoned them to our dressing room where we presented them with gifts for having us, Jimmy said "it's really great to have you guys on the tour, and we are looking forward to it." I don't think he had a clue that we had just played 30 dates with them so in a sense I have never met Jimmy Page but he remains an inspiration to play with!

Can we expect some "outtakes" to be released like you did when you released In Violet Light?
Answer: Rob Baker Yes. Probably. We tracked 15 songs and mixed 13. So I would expect that those others will appear somewhere sometime.

I assume they just mean they will doing similar festivals like the Sarnia Bayfest or the Stratford Ovation fest where they are just "on the bill"......................could be wrong........hopefully I am wrong...........

Rob Baker The complete performance of us doing Limelight is available on Rush's Replay DVD. It seems like it fades out at the guitar solo but that is because it did. The whole thing came off the rails when we hit that section as there was no way I could do a credible Alex Lifeson

This CD is awesome. Would you ever produce with Bob Rock again? Did you find his direction very different than that of other producers that you have worked with in the past?

Yeah of course we would work with Bob again. He is a great guy and first real producer we have ever had in some respects. Other producers have kind of left us to do what we want to do whereas Bob got involved in the details of songs.

Do you think that your "sound" has changed on this album, given the fact that you have a new producer and tried new things that you have not in the past in terms of song structures and instrumentation?

I think the sound is always changing. It is not a makeover.

With this record there are certainly more layers in there. It is the first time that we have played with a piano player while laying down a few tracks and I would say there is more keyboard pads and general layers than we have had in the past. With regards to song structures I think we always shoot for the best song so I don't find much difference in that while it was certainly different in arranging.

The dates we are doing right now are just some smaller club dates around the release of the record with more extensive touring coming in from January right through the summer. So if your town isn't there now, expect us somewhere close by in the summer. So we had to make a choice on some places if we would play them in the summer or winter. We decided Halifax and St. John's would be good summer gigs.

The album will be released somewhere around March 6th, though don't hold me to that. We will definitely tour the States all of March and April and maybe into May. With some summer shows probably as well. We would have liked to have had a simultaneous release but given the choice of delaying the Canadian release or putting it out like we did in the fall we obviously chose the latter.

We have heard that The Hip have gone through their entire catalogue in preparation for the upcoming tour. Can we expect varied setlists, much like the Fort York shows, on the coming tour?

Yes, we always try to vary the shows more for our sake than yours. This current tour where we are in a city for four nights and featuring the new record really allows us to change up the other dozen songs from the catalogue that we play each night. Thanks for noticing.

I have a guitar gear question! what type of effects do paul and rob like to play with? i notice a lot of chorus and delay throughout your albums, and paul loves the les pauls and rob likes the ernie balls. any funny stories of misplaced guitars before a gig?

No chorus! I hate chorus except natural chorusing/doubling. Paul and I both use line 6 delay pedals in fact I am trying to corner the market on them, so if you have any... In the studio we will plug into whatever pedals are around in hope that we find something interesting or inspiring. As for guitars, Paul is the Gibson guy while I am playing Fenders, Paul Reed-Smith, Ernie Balls, anything but Gibsons!

I was wondering if either of you have ever totally forgotten what chords to play during a song while performing live on stage, and if so, is there a certain song you always have to think twice about before playing?

All the new songs that we are playing require some focus and I would guess that forgetting chords happens to all of us more often than we would ever admit to each other. When we go back over songs from a lot of years ago it usually takes a couple of times before you can feel them instead of think them. If you were to ask us to play something like "Emperor Penguin" or "Another Midnight" it would require at least some discussion and playing it once or twice.

I think it varies. When we are tracking though no one says it out loud the pressure is on Johnny and it's fun to see him rise to that with a fury because the drums act as the foundation for a song they need to be the first thing nailed. As we go through the recording everyone is under pressure many times throughout. I think the more we record, the better we all get at it.

We had never met Jamie before he arrived in the studio and did not know that he had played with OLP. I think that's the Bob Rock connection as Jamie is Bob's go-to keyboard guy. Jamie also plays with Aimee Mann who I have loved for years. He is an incredible guy. One morning in Vancouver before recording World Container we went through the David Bowie catalogue and Jamie knew it all note-perfectly being a huge Mike Garson fan. Anyone who can cop the piano solo to "Aladdin Sane" is a friend of mine.

It will probably be a while before I can assess where it stands relative to the other albums in my mind. But in a lot of ways, every record we make feels like a bigger achievement than the last one. I think Bob was a bigger help to us than we have had before in a producer and if my friends are any judges they seem to like this record more quickly than the last few. Favourite song would probably change with every listen. Right now, for me, probably "World Container" and "Love Sick." Different answer tomorrow!

What was it like working with Don Cherry and the Trailer Park Boys?

I love those guys! They are the most down to earth, genuine people you could ever meet. Don is a real gentlemen, kind of shy believe it or not. He spent the whole evening signing autographs and chatting with the folks in the trailer park. As for the Trailer Park Boys, it was the easiest and most fun video shoot we have ever done. Have you seen the movie? I thought it was fantastic. My second time I took my 12 year old son who is now swearing like a sailor. I am so proud!

All five of us play guitar at home and in general it would be the instrument that all of our small ideas are written on. Generally a smaller idea can be a better idea in order that the group has more of an effect on it. Again these things happen in many different ways.

One of the best things about being in this band has been sharing the stage with bands that we are fans of. Probably our biggest challenge in a live scenario was going on after Midnight Oil night after night on the first Roadside Attraction tour. We enjoy taking bands on the road with us. Bands that we like. We have a few of them on our next tour and we will continue to do that sort of thing as long as we can.

What was it like working with Don Cherry and the Trailer Park Boys?

I love those guys! They are the most down to earth, genuine people you could ever meet. Don is a real gentlemen, kind of shy believe it or not. He spent the whole evening signing autographs and chatting with the folks in the trailer park. As for the Trailer Park Boys, it was the easiest and most fun video shoot we have ever done. Have you seen the movie? I thought it was fantastic. My second time I took my 12 year old son who is now swearing like a sailor. I am so proud!

I'm a guitarist/songwriter myself and my question is about songwriting. Do either of you bring a semi-completed song to the table and get the rest of the band to follow along, or are your songs written as a full band? Also, do the other 3 guys ever come up with guitar bits?

All five of us play guitar at home and in general it would be the instrument that all of our small ideas are written on. Generally a smaller idea can be a better idea in order that the group has more of an effect on it. Again these things happen in many different ways.

Are you guys considering any "Fest" type touring, like you had done with "Another Roadside Attraction"?...I loved it in Saskatoon...

We really loved doing the Roadside thing but after the third one we were feeling like we had done it. It takes a lot of energy to pull one of those off and while it was very rewarding in some many regards it was not financially rewarding. Certain Provincial governments penalized us for having non-Canadian acts on the bill by taking a hefty percentage of the gross. We were really quite sickened by it. We will be doing festivals this summer but we will probably leave the organizational headaches to someone else.
You guys have opened for some huge bands, and some great bands have opened for you? Which groups that you have played with have been the most memorable?

One of the best things about being in this band has been sharing the stage with bands that we are fans of. Probably our biggest challenge in a live scenario was going on after Midnight Oil night after night on the first Roadside Attraction tour. We enjoy taking bands on the road with us. Bands that we like. We have a few of them on our next tour and we will continue to do that sort of thing as long as we can.

Gord Sinclair used to do Happy in the pre-Hip days and did a very credible Keith. So even if we did do it I stil wouldn't be singing the lead.

Paul: You've been working with the HDRC, producing their second CD. What's it like to work with Hugh Dillon? What do you like most/least about producing, and would you like to do more of it in the future?

Hugh is an awesome guy and a good friend. He is a very focused and movitated individual these days. He and his band are a pleasure to work with. I have no production ambitions in my head besides getting the next HDRC record done.

The complete performance of us doing Limelight is available on Rush's Replay DVD. It seems like it fades out at the guitar solo but that is because it did. The whole thing came off the rails when we hit that section as there was no way I could do a credible Alex Lifeson.

Hey Rob, A couple of years ago, I started an online petition urging you to follow a great Canadian tradition by sporting a mullet (aka hockey hair, business in front, party in the back). A good number of people signed it - Can we expect results soon?

No I won't be getting a mullet anytime soon. I have done my mullet time. When I was 11 years old and I got Diamond Dogs by Bowie I knew that his hairstyle was my destiny and was soon sporting a Kentucky tophat, not unlike his. Not quite as glorious. Back then it wasn't called a mullet, it was called really fucking cool.

Which 3 songs are you completely sick of playing live? And with these songs, how do you summon up the emotional energy to still perform them in a meaningful and spirited way?

I can't think of any off the top of my head. If we get sick of playing a song, we stop playing it. It's the great thing about not having a boss.
