I must warn any Canadian about the perils of attending these cozy club shows here in the States where you can practically reach out and touch the band members on stage, meet them at a nearby coffe shops before the show, get setlists and guitar picks tossed to you after the show, etc.
They are miserable. It sucks to sometimes be near enough to actually hear them make offhand comments to each other on stage, or hear the twang of the guitar strings acoustically because you're closer to the instrument than you are to the PA cabinets. I just can't stand it when I draw a fleeting glance of acknowledgement from GD after I yell something like "f*ck yes " when the band plays the opening strains of some not-oft-heard gem like Thugs or Flamenco.
Oh and another thing - it burns my ass when I decide to hit the bathroom AND the bar during a song I've already seen them perform a multitude of times, only to return to the floor before they've finished the number. :x
Seriously - avoid American club shows at all costs. Even if you, for some twisted reason, enjoy all that "intimate setting" foolishness, please think twice about coming down here. It's become an all-too-common occurrence that unsuspecting Canadians get eaten by savage Yanks.

I have seen the Hip one time. It was in Gainesville, FL, 1996. Van Allen Belt opened up.
I think someone made a mistake booking them there, because I was one of maybe 100 people to show up (I'm not complaining, mind you, but it couldn't have been cost effective for them to visit our small town). There was even a guy outside the bar who was used to the $3 cover who balked a little at the $10 ticket price. I wanted to explain to him that this band just sold out 2 nights at the Air Canada Center at $50 a pop, but I'm pretty sure he was just there for the beer. What a diffence those 1,200 miles make.
I usually am pretty jealous when I see some folks on this forum who have seen the Hip 10-15 times. But I will never forget my Hip show in a small, 1/2-full bar in Florida. I don't know why they graced us with a show, but the did, and I am grateful.
By the way, I will be visiting family in Ontario around New Year's. Any word on a show?

I have to agree 100% with Hugh.
The last tour I saw the boys in Cleveland, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Rochester, and Toledo.. and for no more than $120. In fact I got my Toledo tix off of ebay for $16 incl S&H, and that was for a pair :mrgreen: !!! I would have paid $100 a ticket if I had know that we would be part of the after party.
Anyways next tour make the trip south of the border the drive is worth it.

I met someone online and introduced her to the Hip. Needless to say...she's a Hip fan now, but of course has only heard "tell tale stories" from me about them live.
I live in Winnipeg, she is in San Fransisco. I think I'd like to go see them at The Fillmore during their next tour, which is where they play there. I looked up their setlist from the IBE tour and it was absotively killer, a few things they wouldn't do here, like open up with Makeshift or stick Inevitability in there somewhere.
Anyone been to a San Fransisco show?

I've got to see the hip twice at the Landmark in Syracuse, NY. Which is a pretty small veunue. The landmark has a very good sound and feeling of closeness to whoever is on stage. Myself and a couple of my friends waited after the show and got to meet Rob Baker and Gordie. It was funny because while we were waiting a couple of college girls came up to us and asked "why is everyone out here standing around?" I told them that the Tragically Hip played a show in the landmark tonight. They were like "Who?" I just laughed and tried to explain to them who they were. They thought that the hip were some up and coming pop band. It was too funny. lol Well that my 2 cents :thumb:
