Is this a Hip tune? No. *the band chimes in... again*
#16

I've always seen it listed as a PJ - Hip duet cover. But I really don't think it's the Hip... I think maybe someone saw Gordie's name listed and got Lightfoot confused with Downie and thought it was a Hip song.
I know, it doesn't seem that plausible... but honestly - ask any 20-something American who Gordon Lightfoot and most won't know. Take that and couple it with the fact that most CASUAL hip fans don't really know the band members names, but the've probably heard of Gord Downie.
Just a thought.
By the way - I downloaded that alleged PJ/Hip tune a couple of years ago and I've since deleted it... I really don't think it was the hip and probably wasn't even PJ.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is DEFINITELY a gordon lightfoot original. not a Hip or pearl jam song.

He is wondering about an instumental cover that is floating around the internet. He wanted to know if the cover was done by the hip.

There is an instrumental version of this song available on most file sharing networks. It is a rock band performing an instrumental version of a song. The file is usually named/referred to as a Hip or Pearl Jam cover of the Gordon Lightfoot song.

I don't see where anyone has implied that this song was written by The Hip or Pearl Jam.

Stephen Dame Wrote:For about five years an instrumental version of the original Gordie's "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" has been floating around cyberspace credited to the boys. I haven't found anything to confirm this, and was wondering if anybody had any new info? Hip tune? Not a Hip tune?

he said "gordie" and assumed he was talking about gord downie, not gordon lightfoot. a good assumption considering this is a Hip website and it was posted in the Tragically Hip discussion forum.

Good point Mark. I guess I knew what he meant, and didn't read it that way.

I remember seeing that as well. Oglawaits has that on VHS too. I remember the graphic saying

Baby ran...sort of..

I remember that too! It's because Gord changed the lyrics a bit while he was singing it, like he's known to do.

I'd love to see that for sure. As far as Gord changing the lyrics, my bet is that he forgot the lyrics and improvised like he does all the time, and quite well. I do wish Gord had a better memory but what can ya do eh?

Its on the album Mellville.

Does anybody have this Rheo's album? Should be easy to compare the songs. I've never seen the P2P file attributed to them.

A few PJ fans, who I guess scan the Hip newsgroup, have e-mailed to say 'no-way' and 'certainly a PJ cover.' So Pearl Jam fans are just as confused as we are.

One e-mailer even suggests that I have "Summer Side Of Life" mislabelled on my website, and that it was in fact "Wreck" that the boys played live on ARA. The P2P file certainly is not a live version.

Still waiting to hear from the bands webmaster.

We may find Big Foot first.

Thats where I seen it first 2 on limewire i think it was, and at the time i just assumed it was PJ, not really knowing there sound as well as i do now, but now, i dont really think it is them,PJ that is, and I dont really think its T.H. either. but then the question remains, i still here the sound in my head and have an idea but cant remember the name of them :? but the rheos do definately resemble that sound of that jam../....

I will not give up. My face is set,my gait is fast,my goal is heaven,my road is narrow,my way is rough,my companions are few,my guide is reliable,my mission is clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, diluted or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity,or meander in the maze of mediocrity. I will not give up,shut up or slow down....Blessed Be!

I've got a recording of The Hip doing Summerside of Life during ARA. It's The Hip, and there's no mistaking that as it is in the middle of a concert; I'll see if I can dig it out and post it.

Yeah, I've got "SSOL" on a bootleg. Don't know if they ever played "Wreck" though. I think the e-mail just shows how many strong and different opinions surround stuff like this. I guess that's how these things spread.

I'm going to go and see if I can find that Rheo's disc at the ol' His Majesty's Voice.

I have the Rheo's version of Wreck and the alleged instrumental cover and the cover doesnt sound anything like Gord Lightfoot's or the Rheo's version. I actually prefer the Rheo's version over Gord's

Now the great debate, does it "sound" like The Hip?

To my ear it doesn't.
