Weather Gord's making a reference to Python or he's making a reference to the history of cholera in Canada (I'm partial to the bubonic plague/python theory), It's a great line. I always add it to the album version of Poets when I sing along.

no one has yet in this thread tied the line directly to the lyric "reckoning carts doing some final accounting". I don't know if that's too stupidly obvious to mention, but I just wanted to point out that Gord's not randomly throwing a Monty Python quote at us, he's actually singing about the carts that came around to pick people up for their last reckoning/final accounting (i.e. death), hence the call to bring out yer dead.

if I'm just pointing out the really obvious, please feel free to stone me to death. (as in Life of Brian).

You might need to check out a few of the early US shows from Summer '98 (ie. Bill's Bar). I think there are a few in there where Gord doesn't use the lyric, but after '98, it's in there for just about every show. I'm pretty sure it does come from a Monty Python gig..

You are right about Bill's Bar in August, 98. But check Martyr's in Chicago in early Aug. 98 which was a week before Bill's. Gord said it then.

And let me put my vote in for Monty Python as the origin of the line.

Funny, but every time I hear it I think about Jim Morrison saying it before the Doors played The End in concert.

I'm not sure what concert its from (probably many just like Poets) but he say's it several times in the begining with just a bell ringing before the music starts.
