It took me a while to truly appreciate M@W because I wasn't sure where the band was trying to go with it back when it was released.
Some time after In Violet Light I rediscovered M@W and felt I could relate to it easier. The album is very artistic and mature - and I think most Hip fans weren't ready for it when it came out.
To me, it's sort of a transition album between the Hip that had something to prove and the Hip that gives the finger and says "prove this!"
I know they probably lost a few fans after M@W because the album wasn't filled with songs like NOIS and ABAC, so it was a pretty ballsy move on their part. I think the album really showcases their growth and maturity and solidifies them as "hall of fame" worthy band. This is the music they wanted to write - and you can almost taste the creative juices when you hear Tiger the Lion, The Bear & Sharks.
Lake Fever is AMAZING. It took me 2 years to really appreciate that song and now it's one of my favorites.
My transition from big Hip fan to rabid Hip freak was when I embraced M@W.

Good call Stephen! :thumb: What a coincidence - I listened to this disc twice at work earlier today. And now that I have seen this thread, I am listening to it yet again. Some of the best songs ever are on here - Freak Turbulence, Putting Down, The Completists, Lake Fever, and Stay (which is one of the most beautiful Hip songs ever).

By far my favorite tune on the album. The extended jam at the end is incredible, and I love how they have Johnny's drums way up in the mix. He's a freakin' monster on that tune, pushing the song into new realms of heaviness. I love it!

I dont know...i re-listened to this cd the other day b/c of this thread, and it just doesnt "do it" for me...I dont know, I like the first 3 songs but it kinda drifts away after that....there are definately some good lyrics in this cd....but its not one of my favorites, I just dont get that "hip are on" feeling from it...

Im going back to dfn, roadapples, and fully...oh yeah and ibe, ivl, pp, uth...music@work is the only hip album id give a 3 out of 5 to, the rest are 5 out 5's for me (well the ep gets 4)...sorry to not go along with the appreciative side of this thread...but at least this album gave us my music at work and lake fever!

God, I love that tune.

I joined the many who threw the cd in because of this thread, and when I heard the guitar riff, I said "where the hell have I heard that wicked riff?" (since I only listen boots mostly and most of the awesome stuff is while they are jamming, as you all surely already know )

I figured it out. I thought maybe I heard it on the Pink Pop Festival 95 DVD during the Cookie Factory interlude of NOIS, threw it in and confirmed it.

M@W was released 5 years later or so.

I love this kinda stuff.
