I classify the EP as half 'gold' and half 'garbage'. Killing Time, Smalltown Hometown Bringdown and Highway Girl are pretty solid tunes... if you listen close enough, I think you can hear a smidgen of UTH in Smalltown and Highway Girl... Evelyn and I'm a Werewolf Baby are songs that never should have been released...

The '80s weren't that bad... cheesy, for sure, but I like some of the leftover true rock sound... Van Halen and Bryan Adams were acceptable products of the '80's... but dear Lord... whoever gave Corey Hart a record deal should be shot through both arms and forced to pick garbage off the 401 using his teeth...

Ever since this thread popped up, I've been feeling like a French Foreign Legion tramp.

And why did this thread have to devolve into a bash Corey Hart thing. Boy in the Box?? Come on, that was one of the albums of my childhood (it wasn't even the one with Sunglasses at Night on it either).

In a way it helps place a significant point in the way the Hip developped.


While the mainstream '80s were pretty much garbage, the underground was alive and raging away! Someone pointed out the '80s garage bands... a good example of the resurgence the underground was having in the '80s.

Really come on... hardcore punk, thrash metal, brit pop, new crop of guitar drone bands, good post punk, garage revival, odd stuff like Butthole Surfers or Sun City Girls, plus bands like Devo, Prince, the Police, Rush, REM, the Smiths, Sonic Youth...

The EP isn't great, certainly, but I listened to it recently and "Last American Exit" jumped out at me as a promising sign of things to come.

As for much of the rest of it--well, everyone has to start somewhere, and frankly it could have been much, much more embarrassing.
