I've been dreaming of another ARA for years. They used to do it every two years, and I remember how disappointed I was when the summer of 1999 rolled around and they announced that they were gonna put it on hiatus for a while. I believe Gord Sinclair said that it was getting too big and commercialized, and that because of all the other festivals that were starting to pop up at the time (Summersault, Edgefest, Vans Warped Tour, etc...) there was increasing pressure to invite more big-name acts in order to match the competition. I definitely agree with Sinclair that ARA is more fun when it's a little smaller and they can invite the bands that they want, regardless of their drawing power or whether or not they're on the cover of Rolling Stone.
I think this year would be the perfect time to revive it. With the exception of the Vans Tour, there aren't a lot of travelling rock festivals happening these days. The Hip's popularity has dwindled a bit and they certainly aren't as popular with the kiddies as they once were (I know for a fact that in some indie circles, they Hip are considered "over"), but we all know that their hardcore fanbase will always be there, and that they can still draw at least 20,000 people to an outdoor show. I think now is the time where they could realistically put on the kind of show that they did back in '93 and '95 where they could invite some amazing up & coming acts, and then include a couple of bigger, mid-sized artists to help draw media attention and sell tickets.

Furthermore to direwolf's post, I think Das Hips have more wind in their sails than they have in years-anyone who saw any given show from the IBE tour could attest to that. Assuming they're writing new tunes as we speak, I'd imagine they'll be itching to get out on the road and try them out.
I remember hearing Gord S. and Robbie saying that their favourite gigs were the big outdoor ones, which certainely lends a lot to the notion that there may indeed be a Roadside this summer.
But don't we start thinking that before every summer, as some sort of hope in the bitter cold of a never-ending winter?

I agree. The two shows I saw last year were freakin' amazing, and the band seemed to have more energy than they've had in years. I remember Gord mentioning in a recent interview that they felt really rejuvinated after working with Adam Kasper, and that he thought they were playing some of the best live shows of their career.
