I paid $60 for a membership to the Metallica fan club and don't regret it one bit. For the $60 you get 4 full colour Metallica magazines per year, a fan club t-shirt, acess to the fan club site which has extra content that that the regular Metallica site doesn't have and a fan club members only board, discounted prices on online merchandise purchases, first chance at tickets (plus we got specially printed tickets from the club) and the chance to enter for exclusive shows (they did 4 warmup shows for the tour at The Filmore in S.F. and the only way to get in was to win tix thru the club) and meet and greets.

Metallica consistently loses money on it's fan club, but still continue to provide this to their fans.

I'm curious as to how you figure they lose money. The magazines probably cost them $2-5 each and the t-shirt likely costs them about $5. I don't think it would cost them all that much to add a club members only section to their website, and while you may get a discount on other merchandise I'm sure they are still making plenty of coin on the merchandise, even with the discount.

I've got no problem with bands setting up fan clubs and charging for them to either cover their costs or make more money (if you don't think it is worth the money, then don't sign up), but if Metallica is claiming that they are losing money on this venture, they are full of it. cratch:
