I don't really remember when I first heard The Hip, or where I was, but I definitely remember hearing Boots or Hearts and NOIS when just after it was released.. and I know a friend of mine had the CD and was telling us about it. My moment of revelation however, was when I was camping one summer after Fully Completely was released (I was around 16...) and it was played over and over again.... I fell in love.
Then came Day For Night... overwhelming...and my whole perception of music was then forever changed.

My friend made me listen to ABAC every time it was on MM when it first came out, and since then I've been hooked

I'd sort of liked the Hip since 95 or so (but then I was only 10, and how much can you really like anything when you're 10)...Then in the winter of '01, my friend compiled a Hip Mix CD that hed play while driving, i decided it'd be a good idea to make my own. I then slowly started buying the albums and became enthralled with them.

well I remember it fully and completely.................
it was 1989, I was at a stop light downtown Brampton Ontario. The DJ comes on and says "we have a song here from a new Canadian goup...........I think its called........Blowin Dough or Blowin' For Dough..something like that". The DJ's laughed and I heard the opening for Blow At High Dough....thought it was a fantastic song, but I typically do not by an album, especially from a new group unless I have heard 3 or 4 songs I like. A couple weeks later I heard Boots or Hearts on the radio, found out it was the same friggin' group! I stopped at the mall on the drive home and picked up the CD................Hooked from then on, have bought every album on the day it came out...........probably the only group whose album I will buy even if I haven't heard the new single on the radio.......................lol

Like KWT said, it was exactly the music I needed at that point in my life. You know, hair was just starting to get long, discovering the world of drugs and real music....

summer of 95 a group of us went camping and we only had 3-4 cassette tapes with FC being one. i dug it and then was asked to go to ARA in craven a week later. grace was the opener and it totally kicked my ass...its been hardcore hip ever since

I worked in the electronics department in a Zellers store for a while in high school, and the TVs were tuned to MuchMusic. The video for Blow at High Dough would come on, but I could only get bits and pieces of it while working, and I couldn't quite get it. Later I saw the video a couple times at home, and started digging the tune. Then I saw the video for NOIS, and started digging THAT one too. Soon I had to get the CD... I can still remember clearly going into the A&M store (remember them?) on Dundas St. in downtown London to buy UTH and being 3 cents short... thankfully the guy wasn't an ass about it.
Since then any time they released a new CD it was a must buy on my list. My favourite time was buying TATH and hearing the sales guy rave about it... of course I would have done the same after listening to it a few times! :thumb:

I bought TATH on the strength of ABAC and I really didn't like the rest of the album because it was so different from the single. I lost interest in it and put it away for awhile. Then I heard NOIS when my fam bought the "Oh What a Feeling" compilation of past Juno winners and I couldn't believe how awesome a tune it was, so I went and bought all the albums. I didn't really start to like TATH until i'd completed the collection, and now it's my favourite album!

1990. My friend's older brother's cassette copy of Up to Here got me interested, but it was the "Live at the Misty Moon" special on Muchmusic that got me hooked. My buddy and I watched it when it first aired and right then and there I was convinced that they were the best live band on the planet. And that was just from watching them on TV. Needless to say I was never the same again.

I remember that Winnipef summer fully and completely.
It started in the spring actually of 1991. I had just bought my first car (a little suzuki jeep) and I had an ok stereo in it with these huge home made speakers that may have only been 15-20 watts, and they distorted quite well when I cranked up the stereo. Finishing grade 11 and heading into summer, these speakers would distort frequently that wonderful summer.
I remember seeing New Orleans is sinking on MuchMusic, and I always thought the video was 'The Old Man Down The Road' by John Fogarty. I clearly remember the old guy with the bad fake beard, so I would get them mixed up. I didn't mind the song, but thought the video was lacking.
But 92 Citi FM in Winnipeg was starting to play this band called The Tragically Hip, and they were not bad, and Canadian. I would also get the three songs that they were playing in regular rotation mixed up. The three songs that spring/summer of 1991 were New Orleans, Blow, and Little Bones. They all stated off with a solo guitar or bass riff, and I was starting to know right away which band it was, but not the exact song....not yet anyway.
Well, I was starting to know these three songs quite well as the summer went on, and did hear a couple of other tracks from the band from their latest album. I remember the album name quite clearly aswell, as one 92 Citi FM dj gave and explaination of what 'Road Apples' was, or meant. I thought it was quite cool.
However, THE moment....THE...actual...moment came on a night in late summer 1991, at my sister and brother-in-law's house. I went over to visit, have a beer, and play some ping pong on their new table. While playing, my bro-in-law had the stereo going, and brought out a couple of 'tapes' of this cool Canadian band, The Tragically Hip. I said, ya, ya, I have heard of them....they are pretty cool. So he played the two 'tapes' a few times as we played ping pong, and it wasn't so much the three songs I had heard on the radio that made an impression on me, but some of the other tracks on the albums that did.
That was it....I was officially a Tragically Hip fan. The summer ended, and a few of my friends had similar stories of getting to like The Tragically Hip. School starter again, grade 12, my final year. After saving a few bucks, I went out and bought the two tapes. Your final year in high school aways imbeds itself in your memory because of that years importance and influence. And The Tragically Hip were apart of that. As the year went on, so did the buzz of The Tragically Hip around school.
That year would end, and grundge would come and go. Though I would be a fan of some of the grundge bands, and the quality of their music and messages, the music industry, pop culture, and society would chew them up and spit them out before 1995 was over.
But there is one band that was a consistant soundtrack to 'my' 1990's. The Tragically Hip.
Not only would they become my soundtrack for the 90's, and such and impressionable and life moulding time (late teens/early 20's). They would also become the soundtrack to my life.
So that's my story....and I'm sticking to it...

summer between grade 8 and grade 9...i didnt really know that much hip, day for night was the first cd i ever had and i knew grace too and daredevil but thats about it...the camp trillium shows were going on we figured why not, lined up at about 2am to get tix...saw them that nite, and that was it...i was hooked...i think i had 100th in my head for 2 weeks after that

I was camping in Tobermory, and a friend brought Day for Night. I heard Grace Too, and couldn't get the song out of my head. As soon as we got home, I went to the local music store and bought the album. I have loved them ever since.

I was a casual fan (enjoyed their singles on the radio) but then I saw them live for the first time ever in 1996 at EDEN fest. WOW, I was blown away and instantly became a super fan. Have seem them over 30 times live since then.

I always liked ABAC since the first time I heard it, but never really go into the Hip until later.
My brother started listening to them in like '97, when his friend bought PP but didn't like it much (Hey, the Hip aren't for everyone). My bro did like it though, so took the CD and fell in love.
Knowing I was into softer stuff (at the time) he got me into Scared, Bobcaygeon and ABAC. I didn't get into the rest until he left for Europe, though, and stole all his CD's! Muahahaha.
Been a huge fan ever since, with limited success in converting friends. Like I said, they're not for everyone. Whatever, more Hip for me, eh?
