The New Keyboarder
#16

Not a fan...

I like the actual band to play and that's it. I don't like extras. I hate bands that have massive backup sections. Granted this is just one guy, but still, I like the 5 guys making their music and that's it.

I am a fan.
I really wish they would have added a permanent keyboard player after the 2000 tour. It adds so much to the ambience of the songs. Well, at least Chris Brown was amazing in that role.

Absolutely. You can do so much more with keys. When Pearl Jam added Boomer is completely changed their sound and the things they could do live.

Yes, one man with a keyboard is a MASSIVE addition to their lineup.

Do you know how to read?

Wow, this is pretty cool! I am a giant fan of Jim Bryson. His work with Kathleen Edwards is so great. The tour with the Weakerthans was really amazing too. He always blends nicely and tries to compliment the music rather than take centre stage. I wouldn't worry about it if you have any doubts.

He is also one of the best songwriters in the country. His solo stuff is absolutely beautiful.

im a fan

especially after seeing the film last night

aside from the keyboard being a cool addition, the harmonies are also sounding really incredible !

Here is one of my 4 videos from Kathleen Edwards show last month. Fast forward to the 2:30 second mark and you can see J. Bryson having a go at his guitar pretty good.

Or I guess with a keyboardist it's relatively easy just to give him a sheet of music. And maybe he will only play on certain songs anyway?

I would hope it wouldn't have an effect on the variation within the setlists...
I think it would be good if they played as per usual and then threw him in ONLY for songs where he would benefit the band (ie: a number of songs from WATS)

I guess what i'm tryna say is... I don't really wanna see songs re-invented by having an extra person add something that isn't necessary *shrugs* Hope that makes sense? :music

Ya I agree. Bring him in for the songs from WATS, but not from songs that don't have a need for the keyboard in it.

On a side note, I think the Sam Roberts Band is a band that best utilizes their keyboardist, Eric Fares. He doesn't just "add" to their sound, he's front & centre of their sound.

This guy was the true hero of the cineplex thingy...looking like rivers cuomo, rocking the cardigan, and giving the cool rock star stare at the camera during the outro of one of the songs....bad ass!

Actually, he sounded good..I'm not a huge fan of the keys being added to the old stuff, but it totally worked on the new stuff...should keep things interesting for the tour!

Agreed a guest appearance here and there is welcome. This next comment does not really relate to the Hip situation but as a rule of thumb the more people on stage the more the act needs the support to cover the flaws.

Again as a rule of thumb not this situation. See it with aging performers way past their best performance.. "If we already seen their best we can do without the rest".
