we're trying hard to keep the stores stocked......we've been delighted
with the response. You might want to try Chapters/Indigo - they should have a good supply.

The original street date was October 7th. However, because of the
huge demand, we decided to release it a bit earlier on the 23rd of
September.

Just received my copy of Beautiful in the mail today. The Hip did a very cool cover of a politcal protest song from the late 60's. The liner notes for the song say " With its evocative images, ' Black Day in July' freezes that moment in time for the listener". For me, that is a very true statement. For others who have seen pictures or read about the turbulent late 60's in the U.S., this song draws a good mental picture.
I have never heard the original song before and never knew it existed. The lyrics have the signature Lightfoot style, and as you listen to Gord's distinctive voice, one could almost imagine how Lightfoot himself performed it. You can also hear Robbie's personal style come out on the few short leads that are in the song. It does sound like a snapshot in time.
I have lived in Livonia, Michigan almost my whole life, except for six years I spent living in Ontario. Four years in Sault Ste Marie and two years in Toronto. Livonia is a suburb 20 minutes west of Detroit by freeway. I was five years old in 1967. The riot described in the song was only a blip in my memory only because all the adults I knew were upset. I never knew what was going on, but the events of that summer have affected me to this day.
I have spoken to my relatives, most whom have recently died, and currently retired firemen who were young guys at that time, about what had happened during that riot. The song accurately describes the events that took place. From civilian gunmen with rifles, hiding on roof tops as snipers, protecting their homes and businesses. Some snipers killed other civilians and shot at authorities. Looting and arson abounded until the Michigan National Guard came in and sealed off the city and enforced Marshal Law for a week. They maintained a military presence in the city for a while.
Since that event, Detroit has been in decline and decay until about 1995. Throughtout the 70's and 80's there was a "white flight" to the suburbs. I grew up in a segregated city where the suburbs were 90% white and African Americans made up the huge majority of people remaining as city residents. There was racial mistrust on both sides. Because such a large number of people left the city over two decades, homes, businesses and architectural gems have been abandoned and stand as rotting hulks today.
Generations of Detroit autoworkers were the industrial might of the U.S. Putting the world on wheels and defeating the Axis powers in WWII by producing more tanks and airplanes than the enemy could destroy. Detroit is a proud, gritty, and bluecollar city. Unfortunately, the city also has a racist and segregated history. None of the racism is open or blatant, but unacceptable just the same. There seemed to be no hope for our beleagured hometown.
Since 1995, a small entertainment district has slowly gained in popularity. Mike Illitch, the owner of a national pizza franchise and the Detroit Red Wings and Tigers, was behind most of the original investment and rebuilding. He was the first executive to decide to relocate his headquarters in Detroit. He built a beautiful baseball stadium for a woeful team and the Ford's of the auto family built an equally fantastic football stadium right next to it which will host the 2006 SuperBowl. Peter Karmonos the owner of Compuware, the computer software giant, who also owns the Carolina Hurricanes, is completeing construction this year of a totally awesome new headquarters that includes a huge all seasons park in the heart of downtown for his employees and all citizens to enjoy. The three casinos are readying to begin construction on their opulent permanent gambling houses and hotels. Out of state investors have purchased rotting hotels that are towering architectural gems and restoring them to their glory. Abandoned warehouses are being converted to lofts to house the growing white executive population, beginning a resegregation of the city. Many well educated and affluent minorities are populating the once all white suburbs. The phoenix appears to be rising from the ashes finally.
Detroiters are hoping to put a positive face on the city when the national and international attention focuses on Detroit for the 2006 SuperBowl. Hopefully you will not see a dieing and crime-ridden city, but a vibrant and tolerant one. Many of our relatives who perpetuated the racism are gone and my generation and the ones behind me are definitely more tolerant and realize we must work together to build a strong community where everyone has the same resources and opportunies.
If you listen to the song in that context, you will realize it is a very great effort by Lightfoot to describe the turbulence of the times. The Hip chose a song with a strong political and social message. It is an atypical Hip song that grows on you nonetheless.

What a great CD! I was walking by Indigo and happened to hear a rendition of If You Could Read My Mind. Well...I went in to get it because I hadn't heard Black Day in July yet...and I'm a fan of Lightfoot too. I have to say the Hip did an amazing job! It would have been cool if they had done Summerside...but I already have that.
Anyway.... if you're a Lightfoot/Hip/Cowboy Junkie/Blue Rodeo/ Sexsmith fan....pick it up! You won't be disappointed

Finally found a store that had it today. Such a great tune. I have it on repeat on my stereo right now.
I wish the hip did the entire tribute album. I wonder why Wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald isn't on the disc.

Hey Hip11 wasn't it Tina Turner that put it so eloquently when she said "Your Simply The Best, Your Better Than all The Rest" :thumb: Thanx a million man,I'm still in the process of trying to get my grubby hands on the album. But this will do for now. (Licks Chops in Anticipation)
