Lance, I think you're on the money. The media try to capitalize on our fascination with these things by focusing on the only thing that can keep the story in the headlines for more than a day, which is the details of the shooter's life and background.
I know a couple of profs at Virginia Tech. I'm sure they're okay but it hits close to home when something like this happens where you know some people.

I know what you mean, I know a girl who goes there and was standing right outside of the building when the shooter began his rampage. I can't even imagine what it would have been like to be there that close to it all, she said she was terrified but luckilly was unharmed. Terrible terrible tragedy

I agree that as many details that can lead to the sensationalization and over-exposure of this tragedy should be withheld from the media / public.
But what is shocking to me right now is that the media (beginning with, of course, CNN ) is beginning to swarm over criticisms levied against VT campus security and / or Blacksburg Police, for not taking "appropriate steps" to potentially prevent the shootings which occurred up to 2 hours after the intial shootings just after 7:00 a.m.

Instead of holding vigil and showing compassion and support of the victims, students, friends and family, some outlets are moving straight to the blame game in order to make as many fistfulls of cash as possible.

ok good..i thought i was the only one...there is NO compassion at all in the media, and it makes me sick...nobody can ever be prepared for something like this, and there's not always another story lurking behind the tragedy...it's bullshit

Like whats with all the compliments,back-patting,and standing ovations at this memorial on C.N.N? You dont see alot of people crying and\or extremely upset over this. Has the media and society as a whole become that desensatised by how common this has become?

I noticed that last nite too when I watching some of the interviews with students and other people, I thought it may have been shock or something but not one of them interviewed seemed at all bothered by this mass murder :?

I think it's less of a personal level at a college of 26,000 vs. how many students at Columbine, 1000? Secondly, at a University you have known these people for 1-4 years whereas at a high school it may have been up to 18 years.
In response to Lance's post: If that were at all feasible it'd be great to keep the shooters anonymous. But that's never going to happen, even if the media didn't let it out. It would be spread word of mouth by people on campus "oh it was this guy and he did it because such and such."

I think it's less of a personal level,but not because its a result of a large faculty in comparison to columbine.right now on C.N.N the V.P\M.C is going on about distinguished writers,leading school chants,and chuckling.I can understand trying to rise above,pick up the pieces and all that,but this is like a convention type atmosphere,the blame game like mentioned above,and distinguished guests talking each other up.This is a sad symptom of the medias influence on us.

Was this what Vic was talking about? On CNN? I think we all need to boycott CNN and probably every other major news networks on television, but especially CNN. Nothing good can come from watching CNN. I'm glad I didn't watch what sounds like despicable tv. :rambo:
