No question Sid the Kid is insanely talented, and he does have more points at the moment, but I don't think he has the grit or toughness of a player like Iginla. I'd take Iggy over Crosby any day of the week. He's the modern day Gordie Howe.

If you look at the 10 teams that score the least amount of goals, only three of them have winning records - the 'nucks, Devils and Stars. Seeing as how the Devils have a guy by the name of Marty Brodeur and the Stars have Regular Season Marty Turco (not to be confused with his evil twin Playoff Marty Turco - who is brutal), it's pretty clear to me that the 'nucks winning record is due to one guy, and one guy only. I mean what more did you expect out of Luongo? Did you want him to QB the PP as well?!?!?

Cferneyh, you're a stats guy. How can you defend a goalie, a guy SUPPOSED TO BE a TOP 3 goalie at the very worst, with a .911 save percentage? He's being paid to be in the top five in GAA and Save %. He has underachieved. It's pretty simple.

The Canucks record is 100% NOT because of one guy at all. Luongo has been decent but he isn't being paid to be decent. Also, in the games I've watched, he has let in too many weak goals for my liking.

Sure, you'd like his save % to be better, but compare his stats to the backup's stats. Sabourin hasn't won a game, has a GAA of 3.08, and a save % of .872, while Luongo has a GAA of 2.50 and a save % of .911. That's a pretty significant difference.

Do the same with Turco and his backup (Mike Smith) and they've got pretty similar stats, but in NJ it's the same story as in Vancouver - the starter's stats are significantly better than the backup's stats.

To me that indicates that if you take Luongo out and replace him with pretty much any other goalie in the league (not named Brodeur) and the Canucks would be significantly worse - and that my friend, is the definition of a team's MVP - especially on a team where only two guys are providing any offense whatsoever.

I tell you though, it's funny the different perceptions that everyone has of their favourite team's goalies. You say Luongo has only been "decent" this season, yet ryan93 calls Lundqvist "top 3", yet I look at Lundqvist's numbers (which I do pretty much everyday since he's one of my starters in a keeper pool I'm in, along with Kipper) and I see a guy having a very, very disappointing season.

I guess I have high expectations. I was all for the trade and I still am happy they made the trade to rid themselves of Bertuzzi. Luongo is much better than Cloutier so I can't say the Canucks haven't improved their goaltending. I expected more games to be stolen by Luongo.

I like Lundqvist but he's obviously not "top 3" as ryan93 says (sorry ryan). As much as it pains me to say this, I couldn't really argue with anyone who says that Huet has been the best goalie so far.

He maybe stole 3 games or so, that's it. Have you seen the amount of WEAK goals he has let in? I'm fairly confident in saying that Luongo himself would tell people he hasn't played as well as he would like. Luongo is SUPPOSED to make great saves. He is supposed to make all the easy saves and most of the difficult ones. He SHOULD be counted on to make five or six tremendous saves a game. I can't give extra credit to him for making great saves some of the time. It's like saying a man is a great father because he doesn't beat his kid. He's not supposed to beat his kid. Hopefully Luongo can pick it up a bit and if he gets the Canucks in the playoffs, that'll be a great feat.

i'm sure that he could play better, but all things considered, i think he's doing just fine..he hasn't lost us any games

Even after questioning Luongo's play this season, I'm still thankful that we don't have to rely on Cloutier anymore. TRUST ME! Big Grin

I still think Henrik Lundqvist is one of the better goaltenders in this league, and will remain so for many years. But he has struggled at times this season, as has the entire Rangers team. When he's on top of his game, yes, i think he's one of the best. But he's been way too inconsistent this season as a whole, and yeah, it's kind of hard to call him a top 3 at the moment, that'd be a bit of a stretch Smile
His last 3 games were IMO his best 3 of the season, so here's hoping he's back on track.

Ok, I know what you are saying but I question that logic. Maybe the Canucks just have a horrible backup. I know Sabourin did well in the AHL but maybe he isn't good enough to handle NHL duties. What if Wade Flaherty was the backup and he had a GAA of 2.60 and save % of .915? Would that lower the value of Luongo? I can't bring the backup goalies into the debate about how good starting goalies are. That's why they're backups-they aren't good enough to be starting goalies. Are you implying that the system in Dallas is responsible for Turco's stats? That if his backup played, they would have a similar record? Maybe the backup in Dallas is as good as Luongo then. 8)

You expect a bit of a drop off in the backup's stats, but the difference between Luongo and Sabourin is pretty significant.

As for Turco/Smith, it could mean that Smith is just as good as Turco. Hell, most starting goaltenders were backups at one point - Turco backed up Belfour. Kipper was 3rd string in SJ. Huet backed up Cechmanek (!) in LA.

But, to answer your question - if Sabourin or Flaherty or anyone was putting up similar numbers to Luongo as his backup, I too would question how well he's played and say that that trade looked about as brilliant as Muckler bringing in Gerber.

Just a heads up that tonight on CBC is a rare mid-week and out-of-country regular season 'HNIC' game between the Ducks and the Red Wings.. a night the Wings are honouring / retiring the # of Yzerman. Coverage begins at 7 pm ET. :thumb:

The Oilers just signed Petr Nedved off waivers. being an Oilers fan, I'm pretty disapointed. Hopefully this means Kevin Lowe has something up his sleeve to make a good trade.

Ottawa's gonna be pissed...they were all over the news yesterday, saying they were gonna sign him...oh well.

p.s. Pronger's out with a broken foot, so give all your "votes" to Rory!

Too bad about Pronger. He was well on his way to winning another Norris.

If the Sens are disappointed over not signing Nedved, they are in SERIOUS trouble. Nedved is horrible.
