Here's to a speedy recovery for Jiri Fischer in what seemed to be a very scary moment. Get well soon :thumb:

Yzerman: "Everybody keeps saying this is great. It's not great," Yzerman told the Free Press. "It's not hockey."

Sakic: "The game is what it was supposed to be a long time ago," said Sakic. "It's the way it was when I first broke in --a lot more flow, a lot more exciting for the fans. We're enjoying ourselves a lot more.

And in today's Globe, Shanahan called people who call it the No Hit League "clowns".

I was disappointed in Yzerman's comments... struck me as sour grapes by a great player who can no longer keep up to today's pace. I wonder if Stevie Y and Shanny have talked about this? That argument would be interesting to watch.

i agree with stevie, and i don't think it's sour grapes...it's a league that's trying to boost scoring by having a shit-load of PP time..and gimmicks to decide games...the shootouts are a farce, and if stevie doesn't like it , i say he's able to openly say it...i don't think it's today's pace that he's having trouble keeping up with...his injuries haven't helped..but i think he speaks the truth!!

*sigh*

I know we're not going to agree on this, and I don't have the talent nor the stamina to argue with you about this like cfern does, but I do have to say this... the NHL is not ONLY trying to boost scoring by increasing PP time only. The increased PP time is temporary... once the players are fully understanding of the rules and how they'll be enforced, we'll see PP time revert to an average amount. The other and more long-lasting methods by which the NHL is increasing scoring chances is by enforcing these rules and taking out the hooking, holding and trapping that were killing the game. I can't understand why some people don't see this.

I agree with you in that the shootout is a gimmick, no question... but we're stuck with it.

And I'm sorry, I loved Stevie Y back in the day, but he's done. Sure he has the right to speak if he thinks the new NHL isn't all that, but I have the right to say he's full of it!

first of all, starting your argument with a "sigh" makes you sound like a condescending prick...and sure..ok..perhaps the PP time will decline..but as of now, the product on the ice is shit..when it gets better, i'll say it's better...

What is it about marginal goalies that seem to get whisked off into the world of announcing...This hockey universe is simply not a better place when we have to listen to the likes of John Davidson (although he gets bonus points for arguing with Ron McLean), Kelly Hrudey, the awe-inspiring Glenn Healey and Kay Whitmore...although you've probably never seen him, as he provides opinions for The Score network...a joke in itself.

I'll give Kay a pass because he gave me a pair of his goalie pads from when he played for the Hartford Whalers back in the day...they are still my road hockey pads to this day.

Goulet!!!

I used to think Healey was kinda funny on HNIC. Then he moved to TSN and became the voice of the players during the lockout, and he became a condescending prick. I would love it when Brian Burke would hand Healey his ass whenever the two would argue over the CBA. The only guy worse than Healey at discussing CBA matters was Kypreos, but I imagine Kypreos struggles at inhaling and exhaling given that he's a brain dead moron.

As for Whitmore, he makes me cringe with the amount of stuttering and stammering he does.

cferneyh!!!

I actually don't mind Healy... he has a sarcastic, dry wit to him that I kind of enjoy. Though it was fun to see Brian Burke hand him his lunch all the time... Burke's a lawyer for crying out loud, how do you think you can beat him in a debate?

Then again, I'm on the record for liking Pierre "Hey, try the decaf!!" Maguire, so what do I know?

Whoa, two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct. J-Monster is no condescending prick. I think the sigh was just frustration over the fact that issues he felt were central to the argument had not been presented to his liking, so he corrected that. He certainly didn't appear to be malevolent in any way. And I understand your point about the games being at least somewhat frustrating right now. Spending a quarter of the game on the penalty kill is not all that fun. However, a stricter enforcement of the rules is necessary for now to bring the game back down to a normal level of penalties later, not because enforcement has been relaxed, but because they players hook, hold, and interfere less. That's the way hockey should be played. What's out there now is not great hockey, agreed, but it is what is necessary to get there.

First of all, thanks Jeff for backing me up.

And Steve, Jeff is right in noting my reason for starting my post with a sigh. Usually I enjoy reading your posts and the debate that sometimes results. But for you to take a shot at me and say I sound like a condescending prick is very unlike you, and, frankly, I think it sucks. It's a low blow and you know it. If you think I'm making too much of it, well that may be, who knows? But I don't feel like being picked on in this way because this time I think it's wrong.

In any case, my point is I think the hockey now is good. Can it be better? Yes... and I think it will get better, unless the league caves in like it did in the past and allows the interference and trapping to come back. So let's everyone calm down, and let things develop... surely we can all agree that if we can live with a few problems now, we as fans will benefit in the long run... especially if the problems in the game now are still better than the trapping borefests we used to have.

Seriously. There are few folks on here as genuine and as non-combative as j-monster. The guy means no evil. Cut him some slack.

And opiated, just because you think the game is shit, doesn't mean it is shit. It's pretty clear from the poll in the other thread that the majority of folks here are enjoying it.

I always thought Barnaby was a dink too. I'll have to watch the highlight reel to see him get tossed around.

I gotta say, having to defend Trevor Linden at this forum would drive me to drink too.

OK, OK, low blow but I couldn't resist - because I'm a condescending prick!

I'd have Barnaby on my team any day of the week. The guy has been undersized his whole career and has been sticking up for teammates by taking on guys that outweigh him by as much as 50 pounds. He's all heart in my books. Plus, his smile could make an opponent want to kill him. I have a buddy who looks just like him. I'd hate to play against him because even when he's losing his fights, he's still taunting. I think he's great.

I think myself and Opiated are the only two board members to dislike the new NHL. :thumb:

Look, if anyone here is a condescending prick, it's me.

Just ask j-monster.

To j-monster's point, the league tried clamping down on the holding and hooking and clutching and grabbing a couple of years ago, but it didn't last long because, well, there were a lot of penalties and the game sucked to watch. So they didn't see it through.

Right now, I think it sucks to watch from the too many penalties standpoint. But I hope they see it through, as the result will be better hockey.

Except for the stupid shootouts, which are what you get when you let half-wits sign off on decisions while drunk and distracted by a team of Romanian strippers.

I don't know if I've mentioned it before, but I really don't like shootouts.
