No they dont and their werent 8000 of em in the Verizon Center in D.C. last night.
I lost alot of respect for Ovechkin last night. Even if he was just finishing his check...it would have been a good 4 seconds after Briere got rid of the puck. A really gutless play.

I hate to agree with Sabres fans, but Ovechkin not getting suspended for that is a complete joke. If it was a random third-line player it would be at least 3 games, but because he's one of the league's young stars he gets a free pass. Colin Campbell and co. really dropped the ball on this one...

The league is having a hard enough time making money and gaining fans as it is. Wouldn't they be really upset if someone takes their russian darling out? I'd bank on a suspension there. They can't afford to do it themselves. Plus, the caps are having a tough enough time selling tickets as it is.

Ahh, the good spirit of hockey. Yes, the hit was dirty and gutless. Whether it was intentional or not, no one will really know for sure. That's beside the point though. Unless you want one of your precious Sabre players to end up with Bertuzzi fame, why on earth would you say something like that? It was a stupid move and the penalty should be more severe but I think a hard fought, physical game that ends in a victory would sound a lot better to Sabres fans, not a vicious retaliation. Come on now.

I agree with Ovie geting the 5 minute major & game misconduct, but IMO that was enough. I don't think the hit deserved a suspension.

Yeah, take a breather Buffalo fans. It wasn't that vicious of a hit. If Briere wasn't 130 pounds, maybe he wouldn't have crashed into the boards. Seriously, I don't think Ovechkin cares about having the respect of a few Buffalo Sabres' fans. There are far worse hits that have gone unpunished this season also. Every high sticking penalty should be an automatic suspension if you ask me. If this was Darcy Tucker getting hit like that by Ovechkin, I bet you guys wouldn't be calling for a suspension. The punishment fit the crime. Ovechkin didn't hit him that hard. Briere wasn't even hurt. I get pissed off when little guys stay down on the ice to add extra effect to a little hit like that. It looked worse than it was and Briere was milking it. I'm 160 pounds soaking wet and I've been hit harder than that in rec hockey without laying on the ice crying. This new NHL is full of too many wimps.

As a player myself, I am just commenting that the hit was careless. In the heat of the moment he may have just done something stupid, very stupid. I would rather see Buffalo get even by smoking Washington out of the building on the 26th. It will make more of a statement.

Unfortunately the league waits to see if somebody breaks their neck before dishing out a suspension. The thing that gets me is that Briere was suspended for accidentaly hitting Leetch on the top of the helmet with his stick as he was falling - last season. It would be nice if they were consistent, that's all.
Briere may have milked it a bit in effort to get AO tossed from the game, which he succeeded. If that's the case, it kind of sucks, but I think I would do the same, especially if your team is down 4-1. But, if that Bench door would have been open, it would have looked like the Draper incident all over again. A second away from having his face ripped of.

Buffalo fans have nothing on the folks from Quebec BTW.
Don't expect consistency from Colin Campbell. Honestly, I don't think the hit was that bad. If Ovechkin was suspended, I wouldn't be that upset either. I would disagree with the suspension but it wouldn't be a big deal.
I don't like teams doing anything to win. I was disgraced by Bobby Clarke's hatchet job on Kharlamov's ankle in 1972 and I think the victory was tainted. I am disgusted by pests in the NHL. It's a disgraceful way to win, to play like Avery, Ruutu, Cooke, Maltby, etc. I don't mind the way Tucker plays because he plays a hard nosed game and isn't just a gutless pest. That's kind of why I laugh when I hear the word "respect" being tossed around. There's no respect in hockey, and there never was. Bobby orr talks about players now having no respect while he played in the 70's where players had swordfights with their sticks every other week. Hockey is a barbaric sport. I don't consider it a very honourable game to begin with. Hockey brings out the worst in people. Even in my small community, when people get on the ice they have no regard for anybody. Sticks get up, hitting from behind is just accepted, grown men challenge other men to fight for no other reason than they are barbaric neanderthals. If there was any respect in hockey, there would be only a handful of accidental high sticks per YEAR, instead of a few high sticks PER GAME.

well it's not exactly the nhl but wednesday's almost here so it's almost time for me to see patrick fricken roy in person! (as a coach) i got row 3 behind his bench, as it turns out guy lafleur will be in attendance & the projected 1st round pick this year Angelo Esposito not to mention a 'teddy bear toss' lol

Hitting from behind is as gutless a play as you can get. Briere was five feet from the boards and Ovechkin hit him square in the numbers, pretty much the most dangerous type of hit you can have. The fact he wasn't hurt was pure luck. Had he hit the boards slightly harder, or at a slightly different angle, it could have been a very different story. Someone needs to sit Ovechkin down and make him watch the old "Smart Hockey with Mike Bossy" videos we all had to watch as kids, cause they must not have had them in Russia.
