RYAN MILLER: GAA 2.64 Save % .913
MARTIN BIRON: GAA 3.30 Save % .886

CRISTOBAL HUET: GAA 2.48 Save % .920
DAVID AEBISCHER: GAA 2.80 Save % .918

the stats don't lie...you can talk about wins all you want, but there's the irrefutable proof that the habs have the best goaltending duo in the division...and the conference...

only team with better goaltending statistically so far, is San Jose, with Toskala, and Nabakov.

To paraphrase a great philosopher, stats are meaningless, you can use stats to prove anything that's even remotely true :thumb:

Seriously though, as a goalie myself, I was never too worried about the GAA or save pct. The most important thing was to make the big saves at the right time to keep your team in the game. Granted that usually results in good stats too, but it's not always the case. But any good goalie will tell you all they care about is getting the W.

But for your little Habs-Sabres debate, all I can say is Biron didn't look overly impressive tonight. Then again neither did Aebischer when the Leafs handed it to him on Saturday night!

Ah yes, the old "stats are meaningless" debate.

Take a look at the top ten goalies in terms of save percentage last year, and you'll see nine goalies with winning records.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/stats/bycat ... eason_2005

Now a take a look at the bottom ten, and you'll see 3 winning records. That's not a coincidence.

It's only logical that if goalie X makes more saves over the long run than goalie Y, goalie X is going to win more games. Anyone who argues differently is ignoring common sense.....or related to Curtis Joseph.

oh pleaaase..people can come up with stats to prove anything, 14% of all people know that..

Sabres are 15-2-1....and before tonight they won 4 in a row without their top 2 defense pairing..I know who has the best goaltending. Wins are the only stat that matters to a goalie. Biron let in 4 against the flyers the other night but did you happen to catch the save he made with 3 minutes left on a 3 on 0 for the flyers...thats the kind of goaltending that wins you hockey games. Marty looked fine tonight against ottawa. He stopped 2 clean cut breakaways in the first and the last 2 goals that were scored were incredible deflections by the sens. Once Miller comes back you can bank on another 5-7 game winning streak for the Sabres which will further distance themselves from the pack in the North East.

The Flyers? Are you seriously bragging about a save made against the 3-12-2 Flyers?

The minor leagues are full of goalies who make one big save a game. The fact is, if he'd stopped any of the other four goals than that save wouldn't have even mattered.

of course all that goalies care about is winning...but the best way they can contribute to winning is to have as high a save % as possible...

Wins, is a team stat...

GAA and Save % are goalie stats...

what's so hard to understand about that?

and if you still don't believe that Montreal has better goaltending, then look at this stat:

THROUGH 17 games of play:

Montreal Goals Against: 48 (goals for 56)

Buffalo Goals Against: 51 (goals for 80)

I'd argue that GAA is a team stat as well - if you've got crappy D in front of you and your team is allowing 60 shots a game, your GAA is going to be worse than a goalie with a similar save percentage that plays with a team that allows 30 shots a game.

Everyone loves their hometown boys. Cant fault anyone for that, but I still have a hard time thinking that every team in the NE wouldnt deal their starting goalie for Ryan Miller straight up right this second! By the way Im not going to mention that Buffalo's #1 and #2 D-Men have been out of the lineup. I just wont do it.

There is no doubt that Miller is awesome - when he's playing - but aren't there a lot of concerns about his stamina? I seem to recall in the playoffs last year they were talking about him being too skinny and running out of steam in the playoffs - and he admitted to being exhausted. And he's hurt right now, and he was hurt for a good chunk of time last year as well, was he not? Isn't this why the Sabres don't really want to deal Biron? Because they're concerned about Miller's ability to take on the rigors of being a #1?

Anyway, just saying that I think Miller is a great goalie, but I think right now the jury is still out on his ability to be a solid #1 day-in and day-out. As much as I hate to admit it, if I could pick any goalie to be the Leaf's #1, I'd take Huet or Emery ahead of Miller (unless Raycroft can continue playing as well as he has - then I'll change my mind at the end of the season. ).

Miller broke his thumb last year and missed 15 games or so.. I dont think that injury can really be creditted to lack of stamina. Just a flukey injury. I do not remember anyone questioning Miller in the playoffs last year excpet for when Philly came back to tie the opening round series at 2. Miller rebounded nicely and took that series over. I believe he only allowed 1 goal in the last 2 games of the Philly series. Then their was the 7-6 OT win in game one vs the sens. After that Miller was fine and was in complete control of the series. He was also good (not great) against Carolina.
Ray Emery over Miller....c'mon now!

Yeah, maybe not Emery......but I have no idea why the Sens signed Gerber when Emery played well when Hasek went down last season. And look at his numbers this year vs Gerber's. YIKES!
Reply

I think Emery at least deserved a chance to prove himself this year, Ottawa would have been better to wait I think, plus the money they shelled out for Gerber could have been better spent elsewhere. And if Emery did shit the bed, there are still good goalies out there that they could have dealt for or signed. I wonder how much they miss Chara now? Say what you want about him, but he has presence and desire to win.

Leafs at Boston tonight. Go Leafs Go!!

Anybody know if they might give Raycroft the start? I got him in my fantasy league. Maybe he's still recovering from his, what is it, groin pull?

Its a groin strain/pull thingy, and according to TSN he wont be good to go.. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/feature/?fid=10460&hubname= Aubin seems to be a reliable back-up, the way the Leafs are going right now I wouldnt worry too much, especially against the Bruins, they are the shits, and I love it!!
