Gord Downie - Secret Path

le.skiv Wrote:Sorry if this has been posted, but I found two videos of Gord, Kevin and Dave performing Secret Path songs at Jason Collett's Basement Revue in 2014. Quite a different experience seeing him sing the songs healthy and strong.

Just got to this now. Deeply moving now having an understanding of the context, but the audience seemed as transfixed as many people I saw at Massey Hall last week. Maybe I missed a previous thread, if I didn't how did we not know of the Secret Path prior to these videos being shared??? @le.skiv thanks so much for posting this!

Wow, that 2014 version of Secret Path -- just wow. Everything we say and do is with the benefit of hindsight, but you can almost sense something powerful and different emerging, beginning, growing, eclipsing in that performance. Wow.

Agreed. I love the simplicity of the lyrics in Here, Here and Here. So much is said with so few words. Very powerful. The “You sign, here, here and here” line is perfect – it draws from expression we’ve all heard in our lives, the mundane process of signing a legal document (be it a purchase or the signing a medical document) and making it official. In the context here, after all this intense human drama and tragedy, what is being signed? And who is signing it? The death certificate? The Truth and Reconciliation agreement? Or is it a metaphorical signing, as in we as a nation signed off on these residential schools? Maybe all of the above. I’m reminded of lyrics from Now The Struggle Has a Name, which I always assumed were (at least in part) about Truth and Reconciliation, “Now the apology done…applause can begin.” I always took this to be Gord’s facetious way of saying, “Well, the Canadian government has officially apologized for residential schools, we’re all good now, right?” ...much like signing whatever is being signed in Here, Here and Here. "Well, this settles everything, right? We move on?" Obviously not. The tragedy still exists, only now it has a name. Chanie Wenjack. Beautifully devastating song. (That's my take anyway).

Great take on that song.

Regarding your point about the simplicity of the lyrics of the song, I think that comment could be extended to almost the entire album, with Here, Here and Here being the best example. This is not something that could be said about nearly anything else he's ever written. I think the economy of words used on the album reflects a different way of writing for him and is one that I enjoy. I love his complex and dense lyrics but I also believe that sometimes "less is more", and that is certainly true with this album.
