Toronto warm up show January 10

Lucky13 Wrote:Who was the DJ spinning records as an opener?
Brendan Canning of Broken Social Scene
I want this dudes job. He sat up there for over an hour just playing vinyl after vinyl after vinyl.
There was no "DJ'ing" going on. One song ends and he just plays another one.
I want to tour with the Hip. Play my records (which are much, much better than his)
This is the sweetest job ever.

Great show - band sounded tight and you can really tell they were trying to play the record as it was written - they shortened or cut extended jams that we've become used to and Gord was singing all his parts for 95% of the night!!
Hardly any crowd banter and the short time between songs make me think they were timing the show to get an idea how long it will actually be while on tour. Throwing a couple rarer songs in the other 10 was nice as I was expecting a hit parade. If the focus on the music is there all tour than this is one you're going to want to see!

ha! Sarah R also = thompson girl. I'm still digging that Pigeon Camera - love, love the guitars rolling into the notes. They make it sound like they play that one every night.

Well thanks! Haha, I can't wait to see 'em in Buffalo now. I'm 21 and it'll be my 5th Hip show, stoked to hear them sounding this good again

New Merch? Seen a Barilko poster so far...

I will not give up. My face is set,my gait is fast,my goal is heaven,my road is narrow,my way is rough,my companions are few,my guide is reliable,my mission is clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, diluted or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity,or meander in the maze of mediocrity. I will not give up,shut up or slow down....Blessed Be!

2 different Hip Zippo lighters one says the tragically hip and the other is that Canadian Hip crest they use
No Fully shirt which I found odd
Strangely: black Phantom Power shirt which I found even more odd
Light blue shirt with a big bottle cap on the front that says Tragically Hip
Red shirt with that cartoon guys face they always used going down to an upside down triangle or something that says the tragically hop
Puzzle

This is a pretty good record to tour but I'm waiting for (dreaming for) the day they tour Phantom Power. Smile

Awesome show,we were all together at the front of the line, cold and commited. I have come to love the fellowship and seeing old friends and meeting new ones.Free coffee outside kept us warm and we all took turns going and getting warm and saving each others spot in line.We met a couple that flew in from Saskatchewan which was really cool and they won a signed jersey, they are members her at the base so I hope we hear from them.Mav came and said hi to all of us before the show, this guy is a class act bringing the fans and the band closer together. As mentioned Gord sounded great, but I have never complained about his voice.Every show is an event for me and I make the experience something to remember everytime, so how Gord sounds is just a small part of why I love these guys.I am uploading the entire show to youtube minus a 1 min battery issue and will edit and add to this post asap. Was great seeing Wes/Suzanne,Francesco,Sarah,Sean,Nick,Jeff,Tony(thx for the beer),Slog, and a few others.Stoked for more shows :thumb:

A great "warm-up" show for sure. You could tell they're still working out a couple kinks, missing some notes here and there, losing their place only in a couple songs ... gord using teleprompter only a couple times ..all in all not bad for only practicing for less than a week.

As for his voice. For most songs he was on spot, an improvement for sure. On certain songs though, yelling was very present and i'm not referring to Transformation and MMP as those songs are more tailored to his higher voice etc, but was later in the night so perhaps fatigue can be blamed.

Overall, I think he's been working on it . It was great to hear Escape and Something On sung nicely and obviously FC in it's entirety. A vast improvement from the Hockey Night kickoff.
This tour has potential that is for sure!!!

* The crowd had absolutely zero reaction to @Transformation and MMP. They're clearly playing them as those songs are fresh in their minds and they can execute them well. Hopefully working on a couple older tunes instead.

The evening started with dinner, with my wife, at Allen's. The steak and wines were amazing and I spent some time chatting with The Original Kid Rock. Made it into the venue in time to get to the front with some Hipbasers that Vic has already mentioned. MAv stopped by for a few minutes to chat with us. I would echo what Vic has already stated and say that we are very fortunate to have someone like MAv,who really does a great job keeping the fans connected to the band and allows us to enjoy these events together, which makes it special. The sound was great, the band was tight and GD was very composed. Vic makes the effort to record these shows, which allows others to enjoy as well, so a big thanks to him. Truly a great night and one of my favourite Hip shows in recent memory.

Most bass guitars have 4 strings, which is what he usually plays every time I've seen them. Did you perhaps mean to say he was playing a 5 or 6 string bass?

Sorry, yes the vinyl was there along with the box set.
I was just pointing out the not before seen stuff.
And why is the puzzle $25 at the Giftshop and $30 at the show?

Was great to finally meet some of the regulars, and a few others . Had a great time... Amazing set list. Had so much fun belting out Something On, We'll Go Too, to name a couple.

Wow I felt like garbage this morning.... But we were feeling great last night!
