That's were I'm not sure. It says download succeeded, share rate .592
connected to 0 peers, 6 seeds seen recently 0 distributed. and it's just sitting there. Do i hit finnish or just leave it alone for others?

If you can keep it open, please do so until your share rate/ratio is above 1.0 - or keep it open even longer to help others out.

In order for others to connect to you, you have to open the ports 6881-6889. This will greatly improve your download speeds, and help distribute shows more quickly.

So I'm on the same page, I went to my prefs and change the port ranges to what you said. under advanced, file locking- do i want to lock this? It seems if I have this locked while dwnldg this will stop others from dwnldg from me or is this an internal thing? Just trying to get this straight to help others that help me and "share the wealth" whithout driving you nuts w/questions.

The ports also need to be opened on your firewall software, and/or your router (if you have one).

What BT Client are you running? I am not sure what the locked option is about, as my BT software doesn't have that option. Check the FAQ on the software manufacturers page for details.

i'm using win xp and tried to open the ports but got lost. I dwnld the how to page (i think you puy up) for the firewall. I'll try it again. I'm using Bit Tornado.

I think i have it. Prefs on BT are at the ports and I'm pretty sure the firewalls are at the right ports. Hope I have it right for everyone. Thanks for the help Chris.

I have a question about proper etiquette.
This is not the Hip tracker - but another one.
I know we are supposed to stay on at least until we are 1:1, but what about if I download a show in 30 minutes at a download rate of 280, and my upload is onlygoing between 2 and 10 KiB/s?
Should I keep it open forever to reach 1:1?

Etiquette says you should seed based on Mb's not Time; so the answer is yes.

Hi Kim

Not using ZA for torrents at home but we do use ZA at work. Basically from the Firewall section of your ZA menus, select the "Custom" box from the Internet Zone section at the top. Scroll until you see allow incoming TCP ports and allow outgoing outgoing TCP ports and click both of them. At the bottom you will be able to enter the port range(s) for torrents.

And this from a site I used when I first starting with torrents:

Prior to version 3.2, BitTorrent by default uses ports in the range of 6881-6889. As of 3.2 and later, the range has been extended to 6881-6999. (These are all TCP ports, BitTorrent does not use UDP.) The client starts with the lowest port in the range and sequentially tries higher ports until it can find one to which it can bind. This means that the first client you open will bind to 6881, the next to 6882, etc. Therefore, you only really need to open as many ports as simultaneous BitTorrent clients you would ever have open. For most people it's sufficient to open 6881-6889.

The port range that BitTorrent uses is configurable, see the section What are the command line parameters for the BitTorrent client?, specifically the --minport and --maxport parameters.

The trackers to which BitTorrent must connect usually are on port 6969, so the client must have outbound access on this port. Some trackers are on other ports, however.

Hey Norm,

Thanks for the response. I've read about that custom box thingy before but problem is I don't have that "custom" box - the option is just not there. I don't know how or why but it ain't there.
I downloaded the music video torrent before and when that was done I was seeding it. Then all of a sudden it stopped and never restarted. Also when I check the BT tracker, everybody else has a specific port they're apparently using, but it doesn't say anything for me... I'm so lost. :oops: :lol:

Are you using the free version of ZA? If I'm not mistaken, ZA free won't allow you to open specific ports. I hope I'm wrong though. I used it as well and dumped it for that reason. Great FW though.

Hmmm...maybe the free one doesnt have that function as hipkid says. Not sure. We use the full shebang at work. If you have Windows XP and SP2 you might want to dump the ZA and use the firewall within, which I'm told is pretty decent for what it is. And it allows you to open ports as found here:

I don't think you are any less protected with that than with the free ZA. Maybe some techies can let us know for sure? :thumb:
